what is the easiest way to change a distributor gear without taking it to a machine shop? i called a couple and they either couldn't do it or didn't want to. only one place did but the guy is super backed up right now.

It is a very simple process, but does require a few semi-precise measurements.

First rotate the crank around until the rotor is pointing at the #1 plug wire.

Remove the distributor cap and any electical connections to the distributor.

Remove the vacuum lines and identify each location is so equiped.

Remove the distributor hold down and remove the distributor (hoping the oil pump drive has the collar on it so it stays in the pump).

Take a pin punch and remove the roll pin from the old gear and slide off the gear. It may require a bit of force or a battery cable puller to remove it.

Slide the new gear on the shaft. Now comes the measurements. Since you didn't say what engine....I will list the windsor/cleveland/429&460 (all use the same measurements per Ford).

End play of shaft (up and down in housing with distributor in your hand) .024-.035"

Gear location (from the bottom of the gear to the bottom of the mounting flange on the distributor housing) 4.031-4.038"

(Ford says if the new gear pin hole doesn't align, insert steel pin in old shft hole, and drill a new hole above or below the hole in the gear at 90* from this hole.)

Insert roll into the hole you just drilled thru the shaft.

Reverse the above steps to re-install the distributor.

It is a fairly simple process really.

Well the motor is a 302 and the distributor is a new msd billet unit. i need to put on a steel gear for the roller cam. i just wanted to make sure that there wasn't any crucial steps before i started it. i didn't think it would be very hard. thanks for the help.
