600 HP 460 with stock heads

600 HP out of a 460 with stock heads, such as DOVE, is this possible? On pump Gas? Looking to build a mild street engine, and would like at least 500 hp on pump gas, just wondering if 600 is out of the question?

Thanks!
Pat

I think it would be tuff to make 600 with the D0VE heads on pump gas. It would take a lot of porting, specially on the exhaust side and larger valves to get the flow you would need. Might be cheaper to find some D0OE-R CJ/SCJ heads or a set of aluminum heads.

Is 500 HP on pump gas a more realistic goal?

Very obtainable. My tweeked 429SCJ made 335 rwhp on the dyno last year stock except carb & headers. Ran one a few weeks ago with stock D0VE-A heads & a good street roller & made 420 rwhp, all on 93 octane pump gas.

Man, if that made 420rwhp on stock, unported D0VE heads, it'd probably make over 500rwhp with some Edelbrock or CobraJet heads! Just a porting job would probably net an easy 50hp, haha.

Well here's what I'm thinking. I hate to say it, but I want LOTS of streetable torque and horsepower. My Cleveland is too wild for street driving, RPM'ing with it is great, but it's nuts. A nice 460 is the plan. Maybe stroke it a bit later, but for now just a mild rebuild with a nice hydraulic stick, and cleaned up DOVE heads, around 9-9.5:1 comp, with a 3000 stall, 3.70 gears, and hopefully we'll hit the 11's on pump gas in the '69 Falcon. Sound Do-able?

50? Probably. I was a little lazy back then. I even re-used the 100,000 mile valves! Paid for it too.

I was witness to qtrmiler with stock D0VE-C heads with stock valves and stock valve job(not 3 angle) and 100% unported ran 10.80s or 10.60s using a solid flat tappet cam and Port-O-Sonic intake. That was very impressive and it was also 8 or 9 years ago when I lived in Tulsa. I know stock D0VE-C heads can make well over 500HP. I also saw the pass which broke the head off the stock exhaust valve too. It was a very impressive cheaply built 460 and that's one of the reasons I recently switched to big blocks. I wish I had realized it back then but better late than never.

Damn, this bugs me, I really can't remember if he ran 10.60s or 10.80s in that Mustang. Sandman, I have been in the process of building a 750+HP 532 to put in my '68 Falcon wagon and the '66 Fairlane is the exact same engine compartment. Crites has the swap headers and engine mounts. No cutting or clearancing necessary at all. I am happy with the headers and the only problem I have is I can't use tall aluminum valve covers without moving the master cylinder a little but I have to have tall covers because of the stud guirdles. A Torker II intake will fit under the stock hood without any hole cutting. Just remove the underside braces from center of hood and a low profile air cleaner will fit. You can also modify the Crites motor mounts a little to drop the engine another 1" for more clearance. I'm using the Victor 460 intake and might use my Hogans twin Dominator sheet metal intake if I decide to sut a really big hole in my hood but David Kee has a 429 stuffed in his '69 Falcon and looks stock(Torker II pained blue like stock) with stock valve covers too. Good luck with the swap and I know you'll enjoy it much better than a 351C. Johnny Ray is also in the process of a 460 swap in his '69 Falcon also. Plenty of '66-'69 Falcon 460 swaps going on here to get all the info you need or require.

Take a gander at this link. There is a good graph showing flow vs. lift on a ported set of C9 or D0 heads. Looks like a lot of power is waiting to be found in these heads.

600 HP 460 with stock heads

I'm looking to build a 500 horse 460 in the near future myself. However, I am new to the high performance business and have been reading and studying the subject for a while. So far here's my idea of what might hit close to 500 hp:
-.030 overbore
-Forged pistons
-Approx. 10.5:1 comp.
-Ported heads
-CJ sized valves
-Cam with .600"+- of int./exh. lift
-Edelbrock Victor Jr. w/850 Edelbrock carb
-MSD ignition
Am I anywhere close to 500 hp? Comments and advice welcome. I would like to run a less radical cam but I don't want to sacrifice any power and I'm not sure how to gain it back if I do use a different cam. This setup is for tire spinning type purposes only. So, if I have to use the radical cam its okay.

I JUST FOUND THIS WEBSITE BUT I READ WHAT YOU WERE ASKING. 600HP FROM STOCK HEADS? I BELIEVE IT I RUN MY CAR FOR THE FIRST TIME IT HAS A 120,000 MI 460 WITH A NEW CAM,INTAKE,CARB,AND HEADERS. MY 64 GALAXIE RAN A 13.38 SEC AT 105MPH WITH THE FORMULA FOR CALCULATING HP FROM TRAP SPEED IT SAYS I HAVE 379HP AT THE REAR WHEELS

We just got done putting a set of ported dove-c on a .030 460. We figure the compression at around 10.5 considering this was late 70s 460 in a truck. We used edelbrocks performer rpm kit and besides basic ignition adjustments we havent really touched anything else. It does have roller rockers and long tube headers but aside from the edelbrock kit it is stock ford. We built this thing for my friends son who was turning 16. A 79 F250 4x4, frame off resto.
You ought to hear this thing run let alone the sound system in it and i can tell you from experience it burns the 38" mickeys with ease. So were figuring that it is possibly around 500 hp with the torque to match.

ME AGAIN I HAVE TO BELIEVE THE 460 IS THE MOST OVERLOOKED MOTOR TO BUILD. I AM SO TIRED OF 5.0S JUST CRAM A BIG BLOCK INTO THE HOLE AND HANG ON. I DON'T THINK A 600HP MOTOR WOULD BE A DAILY DRIVER BUT MAYBE EVERY OTHER DAY.
