whats up with the holes in my 302 heads?

I started porting a set of 1974 302 heads, and when I ground off the thermactor bumps there are holes there.Do these need to be plugged?I did a set of 68 heads and these holes were not there. My ford info says these heads are internal air injection. Is this any good or not?I wanted to use these heads because they have the 58.2cc chambers.

The head is bored through it's entire length for the thermactor system. In the heads used with the thermactor setup, the bump is drilled through into this bore to allow the thermactor air access to the port. As long as you use the screw-in plugs at both ends of this bore, I don't see how having the hole opened up would cause you any problems. It will just allow a link between all the exhaust ports. One of these other guys may know different.

You can leave the holes there they wont hurt anything or "I think" you can pound a rod down through the hole at the end of the head and then do your porting makes for a better roof in the port.

You can get a plug that screws in to the back of the head also to plug the hole.
