Here is a quicky for you. I hear you have to use a special cam gear when using a roller cam. Ok, I'll cut to the chase, I have a roller cam 302 and I put in a mallory ignition, I believe the cam gear is bronze. Is this ok? I've been running it like that for about 5000 miles and all ok, but I havn't pulled the dist. to inspect the gear (no reason to).
I figure anything made by a company like mallory is ok, and the bronze is probably just as good or better than the steel gear they recomend (as opposed to the standard cast gear, right?)
You can use a steel gear with most roller cams and it will last longer, but some you cannot. The bronze gear does not have the compatibility question as it WILL be softer than the cam gear, but does not last as long.
Bronze gear is "consumed" during normal operation ...
I'd pull it and see what you got left ASAP if you have 5,000 miles on it. Mine only lasted about 1,500. I can attest to the fact that running it to complete failure is not a pretty picture
In order to know whether to run cast iron or steel you need to contact the manufacturer of the cam to determine if it is a plain steel cam or if there is an iron band pressed on for the distributor drive. From there you just match the material for the distributor gear.
BTW ... If you have any doubt when you pull the distributor ...
Bronze gear will look ... well ... Bronze, dark golden color.
Steel will look gray like new steel.
Iron will look Black, except for the gear wear area, which will look gray
I don't know for sure that you needed that info, but for what it's worth ... there it is

The motor is a Ford crate motor, so the cam is Ford. I am almost positive it's a bronze gear if I remember correctly, and I have another mallory like it on the shelf with a bronze gear.
I hate to pull the distributor, but I guess I'll have to check it out.
What gear is needed with a Ford cam?
