390 5 speed swap

I want to do a standard swap in my Fairlane, and 5 speeds are more common and cheaper then a 4 speed, so Im leaning towards a 5 speed. If I use a 390 truck bellhousing with a 5 speed will that work out. I know 5 speeds have a longer input shaft then a 4 speed, and a truck bellhousing is deeper then a car bell, will this work out??? Thanx.

I personally don't know, but I believe Alan Casida has done it to his Galaxie with an FE. You make check with him.

Rick, go to the Mcleod website. He has a modular bellhousing system that will allow it to bolt right up.

http://www.mcleodind.com/pdf.asp The new online catalog is still under construction. This is the link to the previous pdf version although I'm not sure if it has the new info on it yet.

Yes. I already have a 4 speed bell and will use an adapter spacer kit for mine. Doug

If you have a 4 speed bellhousing you can buy tremec 3550's TKO's and TKO2's already shortened to fit I put a TKO on my truck bellhousing in my pickup and it's ran fine for over a year now

A Tremec can be bolted to any toploader bellhousing using a spacer made by McLeod. It's McLeod part# 8607 and comes with their standard toploader scattershield to make it usable with the Tremec transmission. It can also be purchased seperately. A picture of it can be seen on page 4 of their online catalog.

http://www.mcleodind.com/catalog.PDF

Their home page is http://www.mcleodind.com

The Tremec is a bit larger than a toploader, so (especially on 65-66 mustangs) a bit of transmission tunnel clearancing may be necessary.

As for anyone looking for the strongest Tremec...

The Tremec TKO II has larger input and output shafts, as well as a MUCH stronger 3rd gear than the regular or TKO Tremec. It also uses a 0.83 geared overdrive instead of the standard 0.68. This makes 5th gear more usable in a racing situation.

I believe it has a 26 spline input, and a C6 sized output. (it comes with the proper slipyoke)

Good Luck!
