How old does the car have to be in CA not to be smoged?

I want to buy a 1974 Ford F100, from TN and bring it home with me in the Summer (to stay). But would it have to pass the smog test?
Thanks

You are in luck THIS year by my calcualtions.

As I understand the Cali law they made (up to) 1973 exempt about five years ago and then determined that any car 30 years old or older would be/become smog exempt as the years pass ... that meaning there was no change until this year and from here on out every year all cars 30 years old will BECOME exempt.

This (being 2004) your 1974 BECOMES smog exempt.

Check with your department of motor vehicles ... they will have the facts for you

I lived in Cali for ten years but then I've been gone for forteen ... so what the helk do I know

I am fortunate to live in an area that is not yet doing any testing. If a vehicle must meet emission standards until it is 30 years old, what do you do when your 10 year old car won't pass because it needs a new widgit and the factory has discontinued the item and the aftermarket doesn't make it? Take your chances buying one from a salvage yard? I have been to the dealer for lots of things for a 10 year old vehicle and they look at you like you are asking for something off of a Model T. If they actually do have the item they are often really proud of it (read: expensive). This doesn't make alot of sense because most vehicles don't start requiring spare parts until they get some age on them and that is when the factory quits producing them. Go figure.

Its the gov. and the automakers working together to make everyone drive new cars. $$$$$$ cha ching The gov make tons of cash of new car sales and the automakers well that speaks for its self. But don't get me started on new vs old, but since you insist. The manufacturing of a new car produces more pollution and garbage than the car will ever produce on its own in its lifetime.

Some vehicles are exempt from the Smog Check program

All 30 and older model-year vehicles are exempt from all aspects of the Smog Check program, but owners of these vehicles are required by law to keep their emissions systems intact. Vehicles built in 1975 for the 1976 model-year are 1976 vehicles and must be tested accordingly.

Additionally, vehicles with diesel engines, vehicles with two-cycle engines, vehicles with engines smaller than 50 cubic inches of displacement, electric vehicles, and motorcycles are exempt from the Smog Check program.

on a 67 ane earliar car, all they are looking for is a air cleaner that is connected to your valve cover. they want a closed PCV. and maybe a charcoal canister if you got it.

i had a STATE REFEREE as a auto instructor and he says in states that smog cars with no smog equipment, they just check for good PCV, air clean not completely open. and just make sure the thing isn't running rich.

besides that, what in the hell do you expect from a car with no smog equipment?
