Tach ideas on 68 Mustang?

Hi,
I have a 1968 Mustang, and I have been thinking about a tach for a while. I am not really sure what I want, or where I am going to mount it. I like the vdo tachs, any experience? Also, does anyone have a pics of their tachs, and where they mounted them. If I could I would like to keep my dash untouched.
Thanks
Pat

Try Perogie Bros. at www.perogie.com. They have lots of NOS (New Old Stock, not N2O) and salvage parts. I got an in-dash tach for my '69 Fairlane there some time back. Looks trick, probably not as accurate as an add-on but it looks like it belongs in the dash, which it does. One minor problem using it on my 351W; because I run an MSD 6al I had to add an MSD Tach Adapt. Not a big deal and works fine. If you're racing and need accuracy, Ford Motorsport, JEG's or Summit have lots of choices. Good Luck, Gary Gordon '69 Fairlane

Well mine is just like the picture above except I have a 5" mnster tach .. autometer sport-comp , with shift light.
I have it mounted the same ... on the steering column
you can also mount it to the side frame for the hardtop etc.. the rail the windows rests in. have it rest on the dash. However over time it creates a indentation on the dash from it resting.
Having it on the steering column I have had no problem's.

Thanks everyone for the posts. If I did decide to mount a dash on the steering column, does the mounting hardware come with the tach, like zip ties or something?
Thanks
Pat

The autometer tachs come with everything for steering column mount. If I recall correctly you get a clamp band with it -- not zip ties.

lots of folks selling the sunpro tack on ebay... it's small, cheap, comes with a steering colum band and has the right "black face chrome bezel" look that's just right on 60s musclecars.
I just bought a NOS SUN 3 3/4 unit to go into a custom center console I'm fabbing up. If I do it right it should look just like the original black plastic/woodgrain unit except for the tach, oil water and temp guages and the CD changer control. Course this may take awhile to actually get right!!

Ok, so I had another idea. Has anyone taken out their clock, and replaced it with a tach? I was thinking of like a 3 3/8 autometer tradional (chrome bezel w/ black backround)tach 8k. I would have to enlarge the clock hole a little, but I think It would work.
Any ideas or pictures would be great.
Thanks
Pat

Giddy up,
What kind of car do you have? What size tach did you put in the place of your clock? If you had any pics that would be awesome!
Thanks!
Pat

I mounted my tach under the dash just below the stereo to the left of my shifter on my 67, its a full size sunpro cheepie from kragen, works good there and out of the way.
