302 heads

I just got my block apart and the casting number on my head is A3B I believe. Does anyone know anything about these heads. I am on a tight budget and was wondering if they would be worth spending the money to have them ported. I plan on a 306 and want around 380 - 400 HP.

Can't help you with the casting numbers with your 302 heads, But if you wan't 380 to 400 HP I would suggest going with a set of aftermarket heads such as AFR,E-brock rpm, Twisted wedge ect. By the time you build up stock 302 heads and port them you would definately be better of with the aftermarket heads. Hope this helps.

i believe the number you have there is a date code rather than a casting number. here is a link to a site that will show you where the number is http://www.aacncclub.com/FORD_HEAD_CASTING.html
once you find that check out ckelly's page http://raceabilene.com/kelly/hotrod
look under ford engine data and it will tell you more about what you have.
hope this helps

Ok I looked at what I have and the heads are D50E they have a 58.2cc combustion chamber so what is the diff between those and D0OE heads. And what are internal Air injection ports.

look down inside your exhaust ports and you will see a hump in the top corner of the port, that is for air injection, there is also a hole in the end of the head for it too. i couldnt tell you what the difference between those heads and the D0OE heads like i have is...sorry, kinda new to sbf myself.
hope i was of help though

I had a 306 with a set of mildly ported 70 351w heads and I made the power you are looking for

If you plan on paying to have someone port those 302 heads for you then I would take the $1000 for port/valve job etc and buy a set of twisted wedge heads and make way more power.

Too bad they aren't D5AE 351w heads. Same ports as the D0OE's but with the smog bumps and same size chambers....and mine had 1.84/1.54 valves too. Might have been installed by the previous owner, though.

About all factory 302 heads are comparable to each other. They're ok for street cars and mild performance, but they leave a LOT to be desired. Don't put a lot of money in 'em...save it for aftermarket stuff. You'll be rewarded with up to 100+ HP increases depending on the combo and what type head you choose.
