4.6 explorer swap

I have 2001 Explorer with the dreaded 4.0 v6, Auto 4x4. I would like to know if anyone has swap a 4.6 v8 into the Explorer. I have a couple of ?????
1. Will a 4.6 bolt to the current transmission.

Gee I guess thats the biggest question. Everything else is a dont deal if the 4.6 will bolt to the current trans.

a 2v 4.6 or a 4v? dont see why it shouldnt if u got the 4R70W? trans..... might have to fab up some motor mounts tho.....and measure for clearances of the oil pan and the heads..since its a wider motor...

Trying...to...hold...back...laughter....
Ok sorry, couldn't help myself... They didn't start putting the 4.6 into explorers until the MAJOR overhaul to the chassis in 2002. The reason I'm laughing is, you would have an easier time fitting a 460 under the hood of your explorer than a 4.6. I really doubt the 4.0 and 4.6 share the same transmission, but that would be the least of your worries. You'd be much better off doing a 5.0 swap.. cheaper, easier, just as much power, oh and did I mention WAY EASIER? Since the 5.0 was an optional engine for your year of explorer. For some good info you can go to the V8 swap forum at rangerpowersports.com

The 4.6 (either one) will not fit period. That is why the U152 was designed with 3 more inches of width..

4.6 explorer swap

I ask about the 4.6 because I got a whole car with a crushed rear end for free. That kind of why I ask about the 4.6 instead of the 5.0. Now but to the response regarding the 5.0, I was got lost with the u152 with 3 extra inches. Could you enlighten me without the u152 like I would know what that is.

thanks Ceco

I think U152 is the Ford platform designator for the revised Explorer chassis. (like "Fox" and "SN-95", etc) In other words, Ford had to re-engineer the whole truck to make that fat-ass motor fit.

Well 64Tbolt I am glad that you have a push rod 4.0 but for the rest of us folks that have the SOHC 4.0 that have the timing chain rattle that starts at 2500 rpm and quits at about 2850 rpm, which Ford calls normal operating noise. So we folks that have this engine just turn the radio up a bit. my truck drive and runs dang good, just as yours do.

Have a good day and thanks for the reply!!

Shiner Boch! Our 92 Exploder had a 4.0 and it started rattling at about 120K. Bummer, because the 90 model 2.9L Bronco II we traded in on it had 190K and was running just peachy. My wife still reminds me of that bad trade.
