410 ci motor info?

Hi all. I just bought a 1965 Mercury Monterey with a 1966 410 big block in it. I have never even heard of this motor. The guy i bought it from said it's rare and is basically a 390 with a different crank and 427 heads. Can anyone verify this? Any additional info would be much appreciated. I've had mostly old Mopars and a few G.M.'s. I did have a 77 Mark V with a 460 but didn't have it long. The valve covers look unusually tall to me. Is this an indicator as to if it's a real 410?

I don't know much about them, but I believe they were called the MEL engine family. Stands for Mercury-Edsel-Lincoln. You could try a google search for that, it might give you a place to start.

Its not a MEL, MELs are FE like but a different motor.

410 is a 390 block with a 428 crank, common in mercs of that era.

They run common large port 390 heads, a good early block, and a good 3.98 stroke crank.

A good solid FE.

Ahhhhhh, he had the 428 crank confused with 427 heads. He is an elderly guy and i bet he got the 2 confused. Thanks!

Pretty common buildup amongst the FE guys....

If your loking for ways to improve the motor, the first and best thing you can do for an FE is lose the log style manifolds, and go with either the 406/427 cast iron headers, or traditional headers. The manifolds are a major bottleneck for an FE. Im sure some of the guys around here can tell ya what you can find that fits your particular car.

Those that say it cant be done should say so quietly, so as not to disturb those who are doing it.

There was a 410 MEL engine, 383-410-430-462.

BUT the 410 FE in your Merc is basically a 390 bore of 4.05 with the 428's long stroke of 3.98.
