Gear Drive vs Chain Drive..... Pros and Cons

I like chains, matter of fact my '66 Falcon race car has a stock link type gear set, and it works just fine.

gears are noisy, and rob power, but are more durable. Chains are nice and quiet, and with the right parts and mantence will last quite a while. I would go with a chain unless you are looking for the sound.

Gear Drive vs Chain Drive..... Pros and Cons

I use a chain on mine as well. Used a gear setup a while back, but picked up some ET and MPH going to a simple flat-link chain (stock replacement '85 Mustang 5.0L chain)...and that was on a mild RPM headed solid-roller 302.

Cloyes chain resides on my 415 as well. So far so good. 'Course now that I've said that, it'll probably break with my luck.

What rump said.
Gear drives were 'at best', a fad. A fad long gone. (thank gawd).

Get a good chain setup, and never look back.

Or really step up to the plate and get a belt drive setup.

(wish I could afford one..........just for the coolness factor alone)...............

Is the belt drive a fad for now or is it REALLY worth $900 or so bucks...just asking.

Gear Drive vs Chain Drive..... Pros and Cons

Good question RumpityRump. Personally, I could go for a dry belt driven cam. But, Ford small blocks just aren't designed well for a dry cam drive. Other motors, perhaps. As for the over/under 21 thing...lol.

A loud gear drive does catch attention...definitely cool (or is that phat) for a 21 under. But, as a 21 over of the species, it catches my attention too. In my garage, it's double roller all the way.

A belt drive would be nice if changing cams quite often, or it you need the extra hp (maiby 1 or 2) that they give you. As for using one on the street, I cannot see any practical reason. As for the gear drive under 21 thing, are you talking about guys that do things like putting 22's on a 65 mustang, or put a coffie can on a honda and call it a custom car? I grew out of that phase when I swapped out some cheepie chrome wheels for some real 15 inch american mags.

Gear Drive vs Chain Drive..... Pros and Cons

Hey... I've been there-done that 3 times...70 340 Duster--79 400 *hevy 4x4 and a 1980 350 gmc 4x4. It WAS fun driving up a street with a " POOR MANS BLOWER " but just do not pull into to a cruz spot because there the folks like you and I
" KNOW " they are just pretty much for noise and lose HP with them- not tons of HP lost-but a little. MY OPINION- go for it if your under 21-have fun-but please respect the over 21 guys...they know.

Gear Drive vs Chain Drive..... Pros and Cons

I told a guy one time "If you put some fluid in your power steering pump that noise will go away!" I guess he didn't appreciate my humor as he snorted " That's my gear drive." For me they are just plain annoying.
