300 HP 289 Engine Question:

I was reading on another website about a 300 HP 289 or 302 that can be built for $1500.00. The engine is a rebuit 289-302 that is bored .060, uses 11:1 Badger pistons, milled(.030) stock heads with screw in studs and a comp Cams 270S solid cam. It also uses an Air Gap intake with a 750 carb and Headman 4 tube headers. I have a standard bore rebuilt stock 4V 289 in my \'65 Fastback, and I was wondering how good the 270S cam would work if I left the bore and pistons stock and installed the intake, carb and headers. Also, how well would the stock 4100 Autolite carb work until I can buy a 750 Holley. I really want to get the car running, but at this point a little more work and money are no big deal as I have waited long enough to get the car running.

300 HP 289 Engine Question:

300 horse with the stock heads is a little optimistic, but can probably be done with that combo.

However, the combo still looks like a good one. The 270S is a nice cam, not too wild, but some meat to it and matches the RPM intake well.

You need probably a 3.50-3.89 gear as a minimum unless you put a 5 speed behind it.

300 HP 289 Engine Question:

Cupcake65,

The article you are referring to was written by Alex Denysenko, he runs a near 500HP 289 using factory heads and th3 4100 carb in Super Stock. 300HP can be obtained quite easily with stock heads as long as proper parts are selected as Alex pointed out in his article. I am getting about 350HP out of my 289 with stock heads..(Let me clerify, factory heads that have been worked over). I would suggest posting your question to Alex over on mustangsandmore forums and he will answer any questions you have.

300 HP 289 Engine Question:

Speed pro use to have a kit that was a 302w 300hp kit, they went with 351w size valves/head.I run that cam and its very useable, its the same as the Edelbrock torker /blue racer Crane grind. It use a set of hyper flat tops I think and headers/600 holley.

300 HP 289 Engine Question:

do NOT overcam the engine by failing to raise compression, increase bore, and work the heads. The solid cam is definitely the way to go in a performance engine (solid roller is even better) but the rest of the engine needs to match it. Stick with the overall suggested build formula and you\'ll be happy. Start bits-and- piecing it and your performance will be mediocre and your MPG in the toilet.

Good Luck.

300 HP 289 Engine Question:

if you are using stock heads dont go with a 750. My 375 horse 302 has a 650 holley on it and thats plenty. I I was you however I would save up some money and buy a set of iron heads from power heads, or maiby some used aluminum ones. Just remember that heads are the key to making horsepower so they are the one thing not to go cheap on if you want to go fast.

300 HP 289 Engine Question:

i would change a couple of things, mostly the cam. i would use the 270h since this is going to be a street car, and stay away from the 750 holley. the 4100 autolite works just fine, adn you will get much better fuel economy. as far as the heads go, the stock heads do well, but save your money and get a set of windsor jr heads and swap them on when you can afford them. you will pick up about 40hp with those heads. 300hp from a 289 is a fairly easy level to attain, and the engine will be quite streetable as well, though you should run a set of stiffer rear gears.

300 HP 289 Engine Question:

I'll give ya the one bit of advice I can. The 4100 is the best, simplest carb ever made. If they made one big enough for my 460, I'd run one in a heart beat!
