Spill Over! Gas Tank Vent Tube.

How should one "terminalize" a gas tank vent tube? I have gas pooring out of the vent tube that runs all the way to the front of the car. It ends right at the mechanical fuel pump (1973 Torino). I don't want to throw a cap on it because I'm not sure how the tank will vent. Help. Thanks guys.

Probably not a good idea to have vapors venting near the motor compartment anyway. I'm sure this tube was meant to route to the air cleaner at one time.

Re: Spill Over! Gas Tank Vent Tube.

Didn't those have a coffe can looking charcoal cannister on the passenger side firewall for the vent to terminate to, and then a cardboard kind of tube running to the air cleaner for the fumes to vent to?

Seem to remember that on my '70.

Re: Spill Over! Gas Tank Vent Tube.

Jon, that tube ending there is NOT a vent tube if it pours out fuel... It is likely supposed to be a pressure bleed off/return tube. Most fuel tanks are vented at the fuel cap...

Your fuel pump may not have the small exit tube and the original may have...

Just a thought.

By the way, the Canister Purge setup was majorly for carburetor fume overflow and not so much fuel tank ventillation.

Re: Spill Over! Gas Tank Vent Tube.

I have plugged many of them off.

It's safe. But, I'd plug the fuel delivery line then push air into the tube and see if the tank holds pressure. If so then plug the line off and go get a Vented Fuel Cap.

Problem solved.
