1979 351 Windsor: Worth Keeping??

Hello I'm new to these forums.I have a question about 351 Windsor motors.

I have a 351 Windsor motor in my 1979 Mercury Cougar XR-7 and I'm wondering if it is worth my time to pull the motor before sending the car to the scrap yard (the car is too far gone to restore or do anything with). The car also has a FMX transmission. I'm trying to figure out whether it is worth pulling the motor and trans out of the car to either sell or for me to put in a future project.

Can someone give me a little history of these blocks? Is this a descent block? I've heard that earlier Windsor blocks are better but what years classify as earlier?

Also how does the transmission compare to C4/C6's for street/strip cars?

Does anyone know what rear ends came in these cars? 8.8 or 9 inch?

Re: 1979 351 Windsor: Worth Keeping??

its probably not an extreemly powerful motor, not that anything from 79 is anyway but its still a 351w and can be built to make power. its always a challenge to find a decent foundation for a motor rebuild. my guess is it probably suffers from some horrible low compression heads with tiny valves just as most smog-era motors do. i doubt anyone intrested in a performance oriented build would end up keeping the heads. if this motor is still running i'd definatly keep it for a future projecct or sell on the side. you can still probablly get $200-$400 for it.

Have you ever seen the movie "the road warrior"? I'm not saying we will ever see times like that but I bet 20 years from now a V-8 of anykind will be hard to get your hands on. If you have a place to store it, it would be worth hangin onto. we talked about this in a the garage some time ago and like I said then "it aint eating nothing"!

The 79 block, as with all 351w blocks, is strong enough to handle 600+ hp. That is still more than the average enthusiast can dream about.

I'd pull it and either keep it for a project if you have the room or sell it separate from the car.

keep the block at least. seen aluiminum 2V intakes used in those years, all the 70 blocks are good, 69 block is no better, 69 are easier to put 4bolt on mains along with some D2 blocks

The FMX is a non-OD predecessor to the AOD. It's also extremely heavy and you would be better off with a C4 (or C6 if you're planning on building a monster) or a properly built AOD if you're interested in overdrive. The rear should be a 9-inch like the other 70's intermediates. Also, if it's an XR7 with the nice handling package, don't send it to the crusher without removing the front and rear sway bars- those are nice pieces to have for us Torino guys.

Yeah, keep the block. No need to scrap something that may be hard to find soon. Another thing, you MIGHT have a 9" rear end in that thing to. If you do, pull that center section and axle if its possible.
