B&M (Weiand) 174 Supercharger Engine Build

I am about to build a budget engine for use under a B&M 174 supercharger. I would welcome some comments on the engine specs I'm thinking about. Please, let's not open the debate on Roots v's Centrifugal Superchargers. I bought the B&M because in my opinion they look great. Here are the engine build details

- 1990 5.0 HO with TRW forged pistons & HO Roller Cam
- Refresh engine (has no bore wear at all) with rings, bearings, oil pump, timing chain etc
- 1980 351W heads (69cc chambers, should give about 8.2:1 compression)
- 1.7 ratio pedistal mount roller rockers
- Crane spring and retainer kit for the roller cam with .030 shims to increase seat pressure to counteract boost on backside of the valve.
- DSS Main support system

I'm thinking this should be a strong motor capable of handling all the power the B&M can produce. The cam has a nice wide lobe separation angle, and the increased lift from the roller rockers will help breathing.

I think the heads are going to kill the power. Especially on a blower motor.

A blower motor needs better heads than a naturally aspirated motor that is otherwise similar. The old thinking was that a blower will force air/fuel through the heads so it doesn't matter if the ports are too small. Now we know that is incorrect. The opposite is true. A blower motor needs even better heads and larger ports to handle the greater volume of air/fuel.

I'd get some aftermarket heads, even if this is a budget type build. Even some cheapo used Edelbrock Performer heads are going to be light years better than the factory 351W heads. Heads! Heads! Heads!

With the idea of keeping cost down I think it looks good. I would suggest using ARP rod bolts, resize the rods and a good balance. Then drill and tap the 7/16 block to match the 1/2" 351 head bolts. That allows you to use the higher 351 head torque and gives a lot of extra clamping cheap. I turboed an 1800 Ford Courier in the 80's and a little boost will make even a pathetic little engine suddenly have power. I met a guy with one of those in a 66 Falcon with close to a stock 5.0 Mustang motor and he told me when he was not running slicks he had big traction problems. So I need one too!
