1968 torino door tag rear axle?

i have a 1968 torino GT door tag says 63D body code. It has axle code 7. What is the gear ratio? 9, posi? I also have a 67 mustang with an 8. Do you think the torino rear will fit in the mustang? Thanks

Re: 1968 torino door tag rear axle?

axle code 7 appears to be 3.25 gears with a conventional differential (non locking), cant tell from that if its a 9 inch. In 68 390 and bigger got the 9, if it came with a 289 and 302 then it has the 8. Assuming its still original of course. Either way the Torino rear end is typically the same length as mustangs but the spring perches are not the same, so they would have to be relocated. Hope that helps.

3.25 non-locking. Look at the diff. If you cannot get a socket on a ratchet on the bottom 2 nuts then it's a 9". On all 9' diff's you must use a box or open wrench to get the bottom 2 nuts off. that's a quick and easy way to tell.

Correct, I didn't state that because the 351 wasn't available in 68.

Thanks. its a 9! The reason I wanted to know. I was thinking about switching out my 8 28 spline for a 9 inch 28 spline. Are the 9's cheaper to rebuild? Is the 28 spline 8 just as good as the 9? I have 2.75 gears right now will the 3.25 help alot? thanks

No, 9" is stronger by quite a bit. I would use the 9" for sure.

28 spline 9 and a 28 splin 8 inch axles. Are they the same? I know that the center and case is stronger. what would it take to put a posi unit in it

The axle shafts are the same between the two.
