What kind of horsepower would this stock 460 make? It is a 1976 460 4v smog motor out of a lincoln?
thanks

Re: 460 horsepower

Those make about 500 RWHP bone stock just by removing the EGR, air injection pump, and installing the optional supercharger...

Re: 460 horsepower

They were pretty lazy in the mid 70's. The timing chain sprocket was retarded 8 to reduce dynamic compression. Putting in an early sprocket and recurving the distributor will wake it up.

Through 1971, engines were rated using brake hp, then in 1972 they used SAE net hp ratings, hence the big drop from 1971 to 1972 engines of all american makes due the change in the hp rating system. IF rated the old way, I estimate the mid 1970's engines might generate perhaps 275 bhp. A swap to flat top pistons or early heads (compression increase), straight up timing chain, and a recurved distributor and we're into the mid 300's.

Re: 460 horsepower

Thanks for all the info on the 460. I just got on for free from a relative and am going to be putting that into my Ranchero instead of the cleveland. That is going into my mom's 66 mustang.

oh one more thing what things other than the timing stuff that was talked about earlier will help wake up the 460. I may put on a new intake but for sure carb. Maybe cam swap maybe.... but any help would be great.
