Best OEM Cylinder Heads...no SVO heads allowed

Hello everyone,

I'm in the process of trying to figure out what heads to use on a motor for a drit oval track modified. It will be a 351W based build, and the rules require that the heads be OEM heads, no aluminum, and no SVO heads.

We are not allowed to port the heads. We can increase valve size, angle mill, etc, but no porting.

Should also note that we can run gas or alcohol, but that we have to run flat top pistons, and none of the piston can be out of the hole at TDC. And we're not supposed to have anything smaller than 60cc combustion chambers.

That said I'm not sure they'll go as far as CC'ing the heads and such, but it isn't very hard for them to check for flat tops, whether any piston is out of the hole at TDC, and any obvious porting.

What are my best choices for heads for this application in your opinions?

I'm guessing GT40's, but maybe there is something else that I'd be better suited to track down.

Thanks for the space!

Well you have no doubt discovered why there are not many FORD dirt track cars. Factory heads, for the most part, suck. The guys I know running Ford use the Cleveland heads for their big ports and the ability to utilize the high RPM's of oval racing. Other than that the GT40 or 40P's are probably your best bet. What is your cubic inch limit?

Re: Best OEM Cylinder Heads...no SVO heads allowed

Thanks for the replies.

cubic inch limit on the class is 361 on the fords. There is also a part in the rules that says no spacer between the intake manifold and the cylinder heads...I think that's directed at the cleveland head swap?

I am wondering to some degree seeing that nobody else in this class runs fords (actually none in any class) if I couldn't get away with some "manipulation" on the heads without it being blatantly obvious to the tech inspector.

Possibly a set of GT40's with some "hidden" port work....

No swap or spacer's, Use a complete cleveland or a clevor intake assuming your allowed an aluminum intake.

Re: Best OEM Cylinder Heads...no SVO heads allowed

oh, sweet! I have a friend that has a 4v cleveland motor...definitely need to do some more research on this deal then, as it passes all their rules as they have them written!

From what little bit I've read it doesn't seem like all that big of a deal to alter the windsor block for the cleveland heads...I'll do some more research on that this evening.

Thanks for the input everyone!

Re: Best OEM Cylinder Heads...no SVO heads allowed

from what i'm reading on the clevors it seems the 2v or 4v head topic gets pretty sensitive on what different people believe.

With this motor the cam has to show no more than .480 lift at .030 at the valves. I'm pretty sure there's ways cams can be ground to circumvent that rule (going on bits and pieces of conversations I've heard), but i'm not 100% sure. Assuming that i'm not going to be able to run any huge lift cam either way, would I be better suited to grab the 2V or the 4V heads?

I don't see this motor being turned over 7000 rpm, so I'm not sure what route to chase on the cam and which variety of heads.

Thanks again for you all's input!

Have you looked into the sportsman iron heads (N head) from Ford? The N head is a killer and may actually be banned in your class it's so good!

Another vote for Cleveland heads. They're one of the best flowing OEM small block heads out there. It's not that hard to make them fit a 351w and there are a couple of Clevor manifolds out there.

What sanctioning body are you competing under?

it's just a local dirt oval track. They are not sanctioned with anyone.
