Help me identify these 9" parts
Alright, I'm checking Shotrods' 9" out, and find these 'square' spider gears that make it like a spool. When I saw them, they immediately reminded me of the locking devices used in the early factory A/FX and B/FX type cars. I have never seen a set but they look right.
They are numbered 4000 F 5 on each. I'll snap some better pics if needed. Can anyone confirm?
Thanks!
David

That's Shotrod's Rear end? The one she just changed?

Re: Help me identify these 9" parts
Yep. My guess is they used a center that they had lying around with 'good' bearings and just added the 3.00 gears. Whatever the deal, I'm curious about these locking pieces.
Anyone ever seen these? Or know the origin?
David

Yep, pretty much especially when you told how the rebuild evolved.

Re: Help me identify these 9" parts
Well, they do look a bit crude in the pics, but appear to actually be special forgings and were then machined to final dimensions. These are no 'cheapie' parts and, although a bit crude looking, had to be expensive to make. Ever seen full compound machining like on the back of the 'block' in pic #1? Just like on factory spiders, that is expensive work. That's what leads me to think these are factory parts. Crude in concept but expensive to make.
I assume they didn't make many of these, and why I've never actually seen a set. What - maybe 100 sets for the racing program? These could also be from a big-time race shop back then, like Holman-Moody. But the shops rarely got into anything forged. Hmmm...
Any other thoughts?

Re: Help me identify these 9" parts
Looks like old time dirt track stuff to me. Saw some a long time ago, but I did not think much about them, so I never asked any questions.

Re: Help me identify these 9" parts
Posi Dirt track?
I've seen that center section in action.
If she turned the wheel in my driveway to back out and the tires were squealing. They both turned at the SAME precise moment, no slip EVER...
I cannot begin to see how that would help on a dirt tack...

Re: Help me identify these 9" parts
LOL - OMG... I think someone misunderstood just a bit. Or was that part of some public artwork sculpture?

Re: Help me identify these 9" parts
If it were dirt track stuff I wonder if the Hamb board would have a clue? I'll post the pics over there and see what they might say there.

Re: Help me identify these 9" parts
Gary - on a dirt track when you go into a turn - to turn left -you turn the steering wheel to the right and also slide the rear end out to the right -- you are in a slide all the way thru the turn you dont need and dont want a differential action -- you want both wheels gripping -- as you come out of the turn you slowly turn the steering wheel to the left and kill the slide-- now its straight down the track--
#23 -36 ply coupe - 327 fuelie heads - 327 block- duntov cam-
morris speedway -morris ny-
real men do it in the dirt--
btw- the locked spiders is what keeps the slide going as one wheel cant grab if you watch a dirt race you will see both rear wheels spinning all thru the turn--

Re: Help me identify these 9" parts
So far on the hamb someone said they were after market made and the benefit was you could take them out after racing. I asked if they had a name for them and when they were made or for how long.
Someone else said they had a set in their '62 409 Impala that he raced, they were Ansen Quick-locks. Poor man's posi.
