2 piece rear main seal tips?

at the point in my engine build that I want to install the rear seal. I have the bottom half in. I installed dry and put some oil on the lip that the crank touches. So all the top halfs of the main bearings are in and the top part of the seal.

should I put any sealer anywhere? I staggered the seal so it doesnt line up with the main cap.

any tips to help this thing NOT leak on start up?

Thanks

Re: 2 piece rear main seal tips?

If the ends of the seal are still oil free ... you might smush a slight dab of RTV sealant on them ... might not be a big deal, but surely it can't hurt anything.

Anything like that has to be helpful to you ... then just be careful as you install that rear cap so as to have everything lined up nicely as it goes down.

I have always installed them with the one side of the lip sticking up 1/4 inch. Slight dab of RTV on the block to main cap surface.

Follow gbic's help and rotate the seal. Also make sure the seal is installed with the sealing lips in the right direction:

His advice to use a little Rtv is correct too. Primarily it should be against where the maincap register meets the oil pan mating surface. If you examine the main cap you will see a machined 45 degree angle and that is what you are trying to seal. It the shiny line in the following pic and you only need to do it near the seal:

Disregard the bits of the old seal shown in the cap pic above.

Re: 2 piece rear main seal tips?

i think I got it in right lol. I had it more like 3/8 of an inch instead of a 1/4. I put a thin coat between the two pieces where they touch and where the main cap seal and block meet. I also forgot to put some in the dowl hole but I will do that when I put the pan on as I need to put some around the pan gasket and rear seal main cap area.

thanks for the help.
