By your description, it sounds like you have black moly phosphate coated top rings and gray reverse-twist (reverse torsion) taper-face 2nd rings. To verify, look at the edge of the ring (view profile) at the gap. The gray rings should have a slight taper (smaller diameter at top) to create a scraping edge on the cylinder wall to wipe oil down. Always install with dots UP.
