piston ring orientation

Std bore 302. Sealed Power cast rings part # E25X STD. Got some free rings to rering my truck. The compression rings were in a baggie. 8 rings are black, 8 rings are grey. The black ones have a dot on the same side as the inside bevel, the grey ones have a dot on the opposite side of the less pronounced inside bevel. Which ones are the top compression ring?

Re: piston ring orientation

By your description, it sounds like you have black moly phosphate coated top rings and gray reverse-twist (reverse torsion) taper-face 2nd rings. To verify, look at the edge of the ring (view profile) at the gap. The gray rings should have a slight taper (smaller diameter at top) to create a scraping edge on the cylinder wall to wipe oil down. Always install with dots UP.

Of course, a call or checking the instructions in another Speed Pro box would give the best answer. There are many ring types from a dozen manufacturers out there.

Re: piston ring orientation

The grey rings do have a taper to them as described. Thanks for the help, I appreciate it.
