302 gear drive question

HI
I just got a new timing gear drive for my 302 project.. the guy had it a long time but never installed it.. so he had lost the papers on it.. He said something about haveing to ground on the block somewhere for it to set in the right place behind the stock cover?? Does anyone have a digram or something I can look at that gives me where and what to do it at..
Here's what I got from him.

Thanks
Tim

Re: 302 gear drive question

No diagram, but you can mock it up and it will be very self evident where you need to clearance the block. And since the block needs clearancing, that means it is down to a bare block anyway, and it is real easy to stick a crank and old cam in the block and mock up the timing set and when done clearancing, you would have to disassemble anyway to clean out all of the metal debris generated. I have done it before, it is not rocket science.

Re: 302 gear drive question

My friend installed one of these back in the day. He never ground the block. There is a tab on the timing cover that normally fits between the gears and chain. This tab had to be ground away to clear the smaller gears.

I put a gear drive in my 302, had to cut the "tounge" off the timing cover to make it fit. It's easy as cake! Absolutely NOTHING has to be removed from the block!!! And since the cover is off anyhow you might as well put a new seal in the cover because the shavings from the "toungue" will foul it all up.

Agreed. I put a gear drive in one of my 302's also and had to remove the same tab on the timing cover.
