170 Engine Problems

Just pulled the plugs on my 64 Falcon w/170. 1 & 2 looked good. 3 was a little dark. 4, the bottom was broke off in the cylinder (OUCH). 5 & 6 were almost plugged up. Found the #4 cylinder Exhaust valve broke. Pulling the head tomorrow to see how far this all went. This car has been parked for 22 years. I thought about changing to a 289 or 302, but the car itself is so nice I figured I would keep it all original and get this motor running. I'm starting to think different now. Carb is all froze up. Nothing moves. Know where to get a good deal on another one??

Re: 170 Engine Problems

Wait till you pull the head off & see if there is any cylinder damage.
You can always bore the block & regrind the crank.
See if the head is rebuildable??
If the carb is frozen, you can always find a replacement.
Chances are the distributor is frozen in the block because the engine has sat that long.
Another option is install a 200 six engine. Remember 68 & above engines use a distributor with centrifigul & vacuum advance & you will need a 68 carburetor cause the last year of the loadamatic advance was 67.
If you go the V-8 route you will have to upgrade the differential from the weak 7.25" diff & upgrade the trans for a V-8.
Any way you go its going to cost you money. Let your wallet be your guide.

Check out Fordsix.com. You will find them a very nice group of guys and very informative on the Ford 6's. There is info on an alum crossflow head for the 200 block and other parts. A 300 bb inline can be made to fit - be different.

Going to that forum would be a mistake. Many of the original moderators from that forum are on this forum or mustangsandmore including myself.
Either fix your 170 if its fixable or go to a 200 six.
Using a 300 six instead of a V-8 is insane.
Remember if you are going back to close to original using a six with no mods do it.
However if you plan to not go back original, find a V-8 doner vehicle & get all the upgraded suspension componets as well as driveline & V-8 mounts.
Going to a V-8 is your best move unless you just want to keep the original six in stock condition.
Remember if you go to sell the vehicle the V-8 vehicle will bring twice the money.
Another problem with the six cylinder engine is lack of decent quality parts.
To get a decent distributor gear for the six you have to get one from australia.
How do i know i have gone that route & could have built a 347" small block for the money i pissed away on a six & having three times the power.
The fordsix forum has chased away more talented moderators & members than it has kept.
If you need some steel shim headgaskets for the 170" engine i have them for sale. Make the right choice from the beginning.

Re: 170 Engine Problems

Pulled the head today. #4 Piston has a half dollar size hole and the top of the exhaust valve is welded to it. There is rust in that cylinder also. The head bolt by the #4 cylinder exhaust chamber was coated in rust also. Motor is coming out.

Re: 170 Engine Problems

Your 170 block may be able to be bored .030"over.
Get an estimate from your machine shop on the block.
If the head is damaged beyond repair another head should be easy to find.
Replace the original cam with a mild comp cam & you will have a nice original car with a little more power at no more additional cost to replace it with an obsolete stock camshaft.
Carburetor & a distributor will be easy to find, either used or rebuilt. Bill

Re: 170 Engine Problems

Head is cracked, #4 cylinder needs sleeved, exhaust manifold corner broken.
I found a 68 289 from a Comet that has some head work done, for a good deal I think. My question is what will have to be changed over for the 289 to work?

Everything, but don't be scared. The $$$ to convert will be worth it in the end.
Try to find a doner falcon, so you can use the trans, driveshaft, differential with the 10" rear brakes & then transfer the front suspension, spindals, backing plate & drums unless you want to go to disc brakes. Probably you will need draglink & tie rods & maybe the pitman arm to match the V-8 steering linkage.
You will need a V-8 radiator & hoses.
You will also need an exhaust system to be compatable with the V-8.
Good luck go from there. Bill
