toploader ID?

Can anyone identify this? David Kee has never seen it, I sent him these pictures and he's going to forward them to his contacts. Maybe someone here has seen this?
Thanks for any input.
Daniel

Re: toploader ID?

The C8AR 7006 D is the main case # from 68-71 for a toploader
RUG-AU is 302-351w in a '69 Mustang I'm pretty sure
W1 and W2 is close ratio/ wide ratio I only think...
Try that and see...
Good luck

Re: toploader ID?

RUG AU is a 70' transmission designation for a 429 motor. Does this tranny have the 1 3/8" input shaft and a 31 spline output shaft? Is the tailhousing C9OR-7A040-A? The C8AR-7006-D case would be correct for a 70' model too. The only thing that I see that is truly odd about it is on the ID tag. The word "Pilot" is used instead of a manufacturer's serial #. Here is a sample of what is normally found on a tag: Very interested in what David Kee finds out about it.

I am aware of that. I am just pointing out that he has letters instead of the typical #'s normally found on the lower part of the tag.

Re: toploader ID?

OK I see that now.. P1 LOT... Curious. Maybe it means PILOT... another odd term to have on a tranny.

Re: toploader ID?

Well this old Fart was looking at my toploaders and my AU had a written tag -in-a- bag that said Mustang 302-351..
However, my 71 429CJ trans is next to it with no tag or tag-in-a-bag, so I could be full of it..

FE...Luther says HI..This was after a date with the twin poodles down the road.

Re: toploader ID?

Here is a RUG AU from a 70' Torino with a 429:

Note the #'s instead of "Pilot."

OD unit has a LUMP at the bottom right of the case, that's why I asked for the pic...

Re: toploader ID?

Probably from a car built in the "Allen Park Garage", actually called the Pilot Plant. It was used to build pilot models of production vehicles and to develop/tryout production tooling and processes.

Re: toploader ID?

Hey there Luther! You play that gut base and play it good, ya hea?

So mayhap you think the P1LOT tag is for pre-production cars used as pilots or as a pilot showing of how the case can be built or made better or something?
