Water Pump - RTV Instead of Gasket

So, I ripped both my water pump gaskets and I was wondering if I could use RTV only instead of gaskets?
If so, which RTV would be best?

Plenty of people will simply use RTV of some sort, but I've made gaskets from Corn Flake packets and they worked.

Re: Water Pump - RTV Instead of Gasket

blue, black, and red RTV are available in full sized caulk tubes at most O'Reilly's. I like the caulk tubes because it is alot easier to lay a perfect even bead.
Blue for water, black for oil, red for exhaust.

I wouldn't advise using rtv (I'm a fan of gaskets and Permatex #1 Aviation Sealant)
But if you need to use RTV and not a gasket, just make sure the bead is laid evenly and you let it setup a good bit first. Letting it set up and harden a little makes for a better seal and it doesn't just gush out. Also spend alot of extra time cleaning the surface so it doesn't just slide out when the pump is put on it.
Another helpful hint is to set the part in place and lightly hand tighten.... walk away for 30 minutes and torque to specs.

LOL, We once made a carb-to-manifold gasket from a Budwieser 6 pack carrier.

Becarefull if not using a gasket that the impeller doesn't jam as sometimes they make a tiny clearance, but factoring in using a gasket.
My Weiand pump impeller on the Cleveland would jam against the timing cover if no gasket was used.

Re: Water Pump - RTV Instead of Gasket

I checked the impeller on the shop bench top, and it doesn't bind.

So I presume, in accordance with your replies, that I should be fine with RTV?

Re: Water Pump - RTV Instead of Gasket

RTV will probably work. You will know soon enough if it doesn't.

In my case, it didn't.

Second time around it was with a pair of new Fel-Pro water pump gaskets (<$5 bucks at NAPA). This time, it didn't leak.

What's your time worth? A tube of the RTV would probably not cost much less than the right stuff.

My $0.03, YMMV

LOL, I've made HUNDREDS of gaskets out of 12 pack and 6 pack boxes Never fail.

As far as all silicone WP gasket... You're asking for trouble. MAKE a paper gasket or it will start leaking sooner than you'd want. You can add silicone to it if you want to, but the strength is in the paper and silicone or RTV or whatever will blow right out of all the imperfections before too long.

If it's an aluminum pump mounted to nice flat aluminum, then go for it., but iron to iron or iron to aluminum, then get paper.

I put an engine together only real gasket was for the heads all else... used RTV. No problem . thin layer is all that needed

I've made paper gaskets out of boxes before, but I try to keep a couple rolls of gasket material on hand.

Growing up old school I despise silicone for assembly, I prefer Indian Head shellac & gaskets. I've torn down several engines that had chunks of silicone in places it didn't belong, like oil drain back holes & pump pickup screens.

Silicone is only bad in the wrong hands. Some people don't realizie how super thin it needs to be applied.

Re: Water Pump - RTV Instead of Gasket

Jer and afd are both right. Thin is supremely effective. I just do not like a simple layer of it as a gasket...
