What would make a coil get too hot?

I have a 64 falcon that I have been building for the last 2 years. I am now ready to start the motor and have been having ignition issues. I was doing some elec tests last Wed and accidentally left the key on. When I went out to the car this afternoon I noticed that the coil had burst on the top. It was a brand new MSD blaster 2 coil. I did notice when I first tried to start the motor that the coil was getting quite hot but didnt think too much of it till now. What would make this happen? I have never come across this before. I am using a msd 6al box too.

If you left the key on, then it will make the coil get hot and possibly burst.

Re: What would make a coil get too hot?

What keeps that from happening while the engine is running??

Re: What would make a coil get too hot?

Firing the spark plug dissipates that energy.

That's why cars have the 'ACC' position.

Re: What would make a coil get too hot?

Not sure how you have that wired but the coil gets 0 voltage if the motor is not spinning...

I had a problem a while back and bought a new box because I had no power at the coil with the key on.... installed the new box and same thing no power to the coil... I next looked at the manual for the box and that's where I read that the coil gets no power when the motor is not spinning...

If you have the coil wired direct to a switch that might be the problem it needs to get it's power and ground from the msd box..

Here's the manual

Re: What would make a coil get too hot?

There is a built in Resistor wire that prevents the coil from bursting. If your wire is bypassed then an inline resistor is used.

If your coil bursts then your crap is broke. I can leave my ignition on in my Falconaround for as long as it takes to drain the battery and the coil will survive just fine.

You need the reducer and a GOOD coil...

according to MSD if it has the in line resister you are to remove it.. it's right there in the manual I posted.. my bet is he wired the coil to a switch..

Re: What would make a coil get too hot?

Hold on, it's an msd blaster coil right? Hmmmmmmmm....

I reckon I'm the only one here that thinks so but EVERY TIME you find a complaint about an ignition system here on FM it's a broke ass MSD...

I hope that they can stand a little more abuse. Morons at Drive in theaters do this all the time not realizing that they're heating up their IGN system, but never do you see a blown coil becasue of it.

Just sayin....

Re: What would make a coil get too hot?

The first version of the blaster that has the short snout was not a good one that is what was wrong with mine.. I replaced the coil with the new version of that coil, it has a longer snout (or what ever you call it) like this one

I've run this one for years now with no problems...

FE , you must read the whole post by the OP .
he wants to know why his coil burst > I said he's the reason he wired it wrong
FE , his system has a MSD6 box .

My bad. I should have read all the way through it. I am just prejudiced towards them.

Re: What would make a coil get too hot?

Ya now I was going to leave this along but I couldn't.... People come here looking for help, knowing "they" more than likely are the cause of the problem... They are here asking for our help, instead of throwing it in their faces give them a hand... maybe they would come back and tell us what happened and how they fixed it.. whatever..
