Did I ruin it?

Neophyte questions here -- I have two tranny books on order but I am dying for more info.

Picked up a C4 off craigs list yesterday. Out of a 79 Mustang, was behind a 302. It had been rebuilt 1 year before the stang was wrecked.

Still had nice cherry oil in it and turned freely, shifted through positions.

But the casting numbers were accross the chart.
PUMP: RF C4AP 74105 A
CASE; D2CP 7006C
SERVO: C6AP 7D027 C

I measured the input shaft and its .839, so its not a pre-70 tranny. But does that mis-mash of numbers make sense?

Finally, and why I really posted. It was full of oil and still had torque convertor and bell attached. Which made it a bugger to move by myself.

So I drained the oil via the TC, removed it, and proceeded to remove the oil pump bolts with the intent to remove the bell housing. Except when I tugged on the bell, I got the oil pump along with it.

Like I said, I don't have a book yet. Once I had the bell and the oil pump separated, I slipped the pump back in and it seemed to go in fine. I put the bolts back in and tightened them only enough to keep the dust out. Or so I thought. When I tried to spin the tranny and shift, it was tight, no movement.

So I loosened back up the bolts and now it turns again, but less freely than before, and with some grating. Of course, there is no oil in there anymore either and the TC is gone.

What did I do? I am planning to rebuild/refersh the tranny anyhow, but this would seem to be an worrisome start.....

Re: Did I ruin it?

If the pump came out more than 1/8" it is likely that the thrust washer, #2, is not in correctly. There are 2 tabs that seat in holes on the end of the pump to keep the thrust washer from rotating. I doubt ruined the trans, but the thrust washer might need to be replaced. They are only a couple bucks from a trans supply store. You might be able to get one at your local Ford dealer. You just need to make sure you replace it with the right thickness. There are 5 different ones and usually there is a # on the back of it 1-5 to tell you which one it is. When putting it back on use a little petroleum jelly to hold it in place on the pump when you put it in.
As far as the collection of parts... The pump is two major pieces. The piece you see when it is assembled, pump housing?, must be interchangable between early and late. The other piece with the splines is the on that determines which input shaft it will accept. Servo's interchange through out all C4 and C5 transmissions. Since it is a rebuild it is not neccessarliy the original parts. If the pump is cut for an o-ring around the outside there are a few people out there that would like to have it, I doubt it is worth much, but they are getting hard to find, for me anyways.

Re: Did I ruin it?

Thanks fellas. I will sleep better. I am going to try and just leave the tranny sit there for a few days till the books arrive, before I mess any more with it.

I could really just have a tranny place rebuild it, but I have the feeling that the tranny is fine and the frugal part of me says to learn what makes a C4 tick and then just replace the seals and get rollin'.

This forum in general tends to make C4 mechanics out of people, ot so I get the feeling......
