C4 won't stay in park

Hello,Ok here's my problem.I was going to put a floor shifter in my 65 fairlane with a column shift.I dropped the tranny out ,took out the valve body and proceded to turn the shift linkage 180 deg.to hook up the new floor shifter.Well I decided to put it back to the column, switched the linkage back, put everything back into the car and now when I put the linkage arm at the tranny into park,Then let it go, it clicks into reverse on it's own.did I move something in the tranny? Thanks...

Yep! you just need to put the column shifter in drive and adjust the linkage so everything is right on.

I thought that the tranny lever on the trans should stay in park when you let it go?

Re: C4 won't stay in park

If the park pawl doesn't drop fully into the park gear and pawl sits on top of teeth ,it is possible that the shift linkage can pop out. If the shifter is in good condition it should have a detent to hold it in position.

Try turning the output shaft as you put shifter in park, you'll find if you hear it drop in fully the shifter will stay in park.

Did you get the "boot" into the correct position?

Re: C4 won't stay in park

Ok I will drop the drive shaft, and take the shift arm loose to the column. Then hold the tranny shift arm in park and it should drop into park as I turn the tail shaft and stay there..correct? Then I should be able to reconnect the arm to the column?
