Re: What rear gear and tire size?

4.11 gear and 10.5 X 28.5 slicks. I cross the finish at about 125MPH at 6500rpm.

Question is a little too generic/vague for a response similar to your combo. What's your motor, power adder?, max rpm you want to run, converter, expected ET?

Re: What rear gear and tire size?

My combo is not completed yet but so far,88 mustang gutted 8point roll cage, 393w with carb and novi1000 approx 10# boost(no dyno yet), redneckperformance c4 with brake and 4000rpm stall, 8.8 with 4;10 ring and pinion, hardened axles with 15x8 prostar wheels, wraped in 26" tall mt drag radials. Any more info let me know.

Re: What rear gear and tire size?

Hey there! I have an 83 Capri w/ a 408 Windsor, w/ a PowerGlide, 9in. w/ 4.57 and 10x28x15 M/T ET Drags. I cross finish line in 1/4 mile right @ 7000 rpm, 10.50 @ 128mph. With the smaller rear slick and lower 1st gear in your C4 you will probably run about same MPH, maybe a bit quicker ET wise with your blower. Work on your launch , get your 60 ft. times consistant, and enjoy the hell out of your car! Race safe! Dale

Based on the description, you may actually end up running quicker with less gear.....3.73, 3.55. I run a naturally aspirated 408W in my 91 notch with a C4. I currently also use a 4000 stall redneck 9.5" converter, mine actually stalls around 4800 on the brake. I'm switching to an 8" converter. My car has been running 10.8's @ 122mph, 1.44 60 foot in the 1/4 with 4.10 gears and 28 x 10.50 ET Drags and that is at 2990 pounds with me in it. I'm contemplating switching to a 3.73 gear.

Re: What rear gear and tire size?

Just some thoughts. First determine what tire height will work best for your application. Then if you are going to run the engine on an engine dyno wait and see what your power curve looks like and what it makes.

From that you will be able to see a ball park shift rpm and cross rpm. If you trust the dyno as being accurate you will also be able to estimate an approximate mph it will ideally run at your weight in the quarter mile. Once you have an educated guess as to how fast it will go through the traps and know what rpm it should want to cross (often higher than your shift point unless power just all of a sudden falls off a cliff) you can start to calculate gearing. Other thing I would want to know is what the converter manufacturer thinks the percent of slip through the traps should be at your weight and power and add that to the equation.

Trying to speculate before knowing this stuff is just a stab in the dark in my opinion.
