351w budget build

Hi, I'm building a '78 351w for street/strip. This is a budget build and so I am slowly collecting parts out of the local classifieds. Here's what I have so far:

1978 351w block bored .030
Speed Pro 5cc dome pistons
Stock rods and crank
Super Victor intake (ported)
World Products Windsor SR 200cc heads (ported)
35-414-3 comp cam and springs
.500 intake/exhaust
270/270 intake exhaust
224/224 duration

I don't know the flow numbers on the heads.

Anyone have a similar setup? What kind of hp/tq numbers are you getting? It kinda looks like I could have a better cam for this setup. Any suggestions?

Re: 351w budget build

Its going into a 48 dodge b-series truck. Its gonna be a completely custom setup and I had a couple of 351s sitting around for a few years from old mustangs i used to run. It'll just be a weekend cruiser/rat rod. I have 3.73 gears in it and the stock converter with the 351. I wanna try to get around 500 hp out the engine.

The combination will be a bit off since you have a good set of heads, small-ish cam, deep breathing manifold and a stock converter. Definitely a bigger cam and a much higher stall converter would work better. IMHO.

This truck is just screaming for a 360 stroker!! And they are available for a reasonable price!!! I have seen them with all the parts and machine work for under $3500.00 Rethink you engine options is what I think. A nice 434 CID cast iron crank small block dodge would make for a sweeeeeeeeeet mill to have under the hood of that truck!!!

Haha. Ya, my original plan was to build a stroker out of 360. I just had the 351 sitting around and there's a ton of mustang builders selling their parts when they upgrade.

So I found some flow numbers online for the windsor sr heads. I put in my cam, intake, compression ratio, etc into desktop dyno and came up with 600hp at 6500 rpm and 520 lbft torque at 5000 rpm. Hp numbers were still climbing until about 8000 rpm but I'm not sure what rpm the crank and rods can handle. Does this seem a bit high for this combo? Is the program accurate?

Re: 351w budget build

Probably 300 HP with that combo. You need a lot of $$$ for 600hp

Re: 351w budget build

There is something seriously wrong with the numbers coming out of that simulation. My guess is in your cam numbers since it is still trying to go at 8000 rpms.

I have seen a 392 stroker with the 200 series heads make 460 horsepower in the 4500 rpm range on a flywheel dyno and that was a professional builder/tuner shop. Torque was nice and fat also.

With the right stuff in your engine combination you may be able to hit that mark or fairly close to that.
