Re: Why is mine called a 289 Special?

289 special is probably something you are seeing on valve cover or air cleaner decal, right? Doesn't mean much as far as performance, etc. If you are asking about distributor timing, probably 12 deg initial is sufficient. Has the motor ever been rebuilt?

Is it anything like a 38 Special?

Reguardless, the HIPO 280 2V 289 or 4V 289 your timing could be either... TDC, 6* or 12* for a stock 289.

Re: Why is mine called a 289 Special?

Why is mine called a 289 Special? The one and only reason is you are special because the engine is not. It must have been a marketing thing. I saw some with gold 289 emblems on the fender and gold decals on the valve covers on a stock 289 2 barrel. I had a set of those gold 289 emblems but I lost them some where.

the 289 "special" is special because it's not a 260.... just a regular 289

Re: Why is mine called a 289 Special?

In regards to your comment on being surprised its all still there, my sisters 289 lasted the full 41 years without rebuilding anything (engine or tranny) everything and i mean everything was original.

What finally killed it after months of driving as a DD with a bad valve tap was that the damned oil pump driveshaft broke on the freeway and it burned up the crank bearings.

The point being is that these old motors (at least the fords) seem to be pretty tough .

Re: Why is mine called a 289 Special?

The 289K 2/63-1968 271 bhp @ 6000 rpm 312lbs of torque @ 3,400 rpm compression ratio pre 4/64 11.6:1, 1965 10.5:1 1966-67 10.0:1 in 1963 ford released the 289 high performance engine that produced 271b hp @6000rpm. stronger connecting rods with 3/8" bolts, thicker main caps, solid lifter cam screw in rocker arm studs, machined valve spring seats, forged steel exhaust valves, better flowing exaust manifolds and a dual point distributor. I think this is what you have. FTB

Re: Why is mine called a 289 Special?

The 289 "Special" was just the 2 barrel 289. Nothing really special about it. It is a 9 to 1 compression 2 barrel that made 195 HP.
