Post 1968 fairlane 500 GT ??

This car I bought is decaled to be a fairlane 500 GT , but in the middle of the back lights is a round hub that says torino GT. It lookes out of place seeing how the car is also decaled inside and out to be a fairlane 500, Is this not right?
All of the research ive done says theres no such thing as a 68 fairlane 500 GT only 68 fairlane 500, and 68 torino GTs, and some things I read say fairlane/torino GT so whats what?? Did the previose owner just put torino GT decals on fairlane 500 sportback???

PS. the car was originally a F code (302 2V)

Re: 1968 fairlane 500 GT ??

If you mean that center medalion than... yes, they can be changed out rather easily. This is something I can see someone doing. I think that all the Fairlanes have a blank one with a decal that would fall off. Mine is a Big T and the repro sticker came off in a week... not a very good $9 sticker. This is a pic of my Big T and my old '68 GT. The GT medalion does look beter than being blank. As far as which one is appropriate, go off of your body code if you hant to be original.

I think Im going to go with the original decaling the car would have come with. But what I dont understand from looking at youre pictures and some others is that my rear trim behind the medalion looks exactly like youre right side picture showing the rear 68 torino GT medalion with the small red lined trim behind the medalion. Not like the picture displade on the left wich has the fatter or taller back trim showing the blank medalion. What do you think thats all about?

I researched my vin# and comes out to be a 68 fairlane 500 F code(302 2V) fastback sport coupe...

Do you think its even suposed to have a rear medalion or just trim?

It kinda sucks becouse all of the GT stuff realy looks cool on the car, but if its not right it wont sit easy on my mind. especialy if they didnt make a 68 fairlane 500 GT and I take it out to show at car shows "and there will be ford guys there" , and theyll know whats what on the car. you know what Im saying!

I will try to put some pics on to give you a good Idea of what Im talking about. Let my know what you think....

The plain one on the left is a '69. The center piece fits into the trim pieces that flank it. So, they'll be a matched set. It looks like the 68's may be thinner. I'll have to look up some references to see for sure.

I believe all the Fairlanes/Torinos have the 'false gas cap'. The 'GT' is the medallion I was referencing. I believe the Fairlanes would have the sticker. I'll have to look that up too to be sure, I haven't seen alot of Fairlane 500 to reference.

I agree and have to say you should get the Marti report on your vin.
::Marti Auto Works - 1955 - 1989 Ford Parts
He's got the official records for Ford from that era and is the best way to authenticate your car.

I'll post some pics later to show what I find.

From what I see it won't be hard to correct your trim. (center grill, hub cap, beauty ring, false gas cap and the two flanking pieces)

By the way, Excellent pics.

Re: 1968 fairlane 500 GT ??

According to Ford Torino GT and Mercury Cyclone: illustrated restoration guide, the grilles are the same, just remove the crest/ medallion. Unless you had wheel options, your wheels would look like mine<see pic>. Argent Silver rims with plain center cap and a beauty ring. The book says Fairlane 500 had the Ford Crest were the GT is on the back. It's a bit vague but it's what I expected. I can' find any good reference pics for the rear emblem.

Hope this helps.

Well, I thought so... I did find this pic page from Fairlane Registry - FordFairlane.com...
down at the bottom, middle pic.
1968 Fairlane Torino Pictures
I re-read the section in the book on emblems. It appears that I mis-inturpreted what it said(it's rather long winded in places with not alot of thourough pics). It appears that the Torino model got a Torino medalian the GT got a GT medalian and the Fairlane(at least for 68) got no emblem at all. This info still seams a bit hazy.

I know , everything I look up on the rear decal is very fogy info even the pics I find on line from old pics to cars that were just restored are very vauge on the rear decal.

Most 68 fairlane restored pics I find seem to not have a medalion or no emblem just trim, but the fairlanes were so close to the torinos sometimes I get confused or misled from what Im looking at or reading. I dont think it gets a medalion but from everything Ive seen on the 68+69 Im just not sure.

Re: 1968 fairlane 500 GT ??

At this point I'd say the '69 Fairlanes got a medalion like this one:
http://www.autokrafters.com/v4/go.gn...&product=32001
but the '68s didn't get anything, like you've noticed. I believe that is the medalion that the book refers to for '69 Fairlanes. Remember, the picture of mine earlier was of my '69 Fairlane and my old '68 GT...
