Which engine mounts for 302 into a 62

Alright guys I need your help. I'm installing a 302 with AOD into a 62 Fairlane 500 Sport Coupe. It will be replacing the original 260. The 260 engine mounts won't fit the 302 due to Fords changing the bolt spacing on the engine. What do I need to pull off this swap?

You will need the top plates from a 289 Faiirlane 1964 or 1965. They made this change sometime in the later part of 1963. I redid my original ones by welding some extra material and using a template from an article in a Fairlaner magazine. The original top plates are hard to find and are bringing a top dollar.

I have the plates to fit a 289/302 into a 63 Falcon. Are they what you need?

Re: Which engine mounts for 302 into a 62

Wasn't aware that Ford used adapter plates that allowed them to use the '62 mounts on the later style blocks. I am currently using adapters that I fabricated which allow me to use my existing mounts. Pretty simple fab job really. Just thought there was an engine mount that didn't require adapter plates but I guess there isn't.

Thanks for the offer FE but I guess I will stick with what I am currently using.

Re: Which engine mounts for 302 into a 62

It is a simple mod, i think the 62;s top plates are like, 6" from block mount bolt hole to bolt hole, just add in a piece of steel to make em 7" apart, drill a hole to fit & will bolt right to your motor.
I saw the longer top plates, on F;lane site for 60 bucks!
If FE&broke will give you a deal, buy those top plates, just ask him to measure from bolt hole & bolt hole, make sure they;re 7" apart
If your working on any yr. Fairlane, joining the Fairlane Club of America is cheap considering the wealth of knowledge not only in the club magazine but, on the Fairlane Tech, site too.

I have fabricated brackets but would love to see what the factory plates look like. If someone out there could post a picture it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

Re: Which engine mounts for 302 into a 62

It's real easy to do. The mount bosses on the '62 motors, were 6" back from the front of the block. The 302 bosses are 7" back and offset left from the right.

Just make two steal straps about 8" long out of 1/4 steal and drill three holes . . . to mount on the original motor mounts and also to mate up to the 302. You just need to turn one of them facing towards the back of the motor.

The picture below of just the mount actually has the strap on the wrong side. It was just for the picture so you could see the entire strap. The second picture shows the whole thing mounted on the motor. The mount on the other side will need the strap turned 180 degrees because the bosses are offset . . . or is it the mounts are offset?? Can't remember.

I've been driving (not so softly) this '62 with the setup shown for about 8 years and no problems.

Just make sure the strap is on top of the motor mount so the weight of it all is supported.

Hope this helps!
