1966 Ford Fairlane window problems

Hi, new here, first post...

i recently bought a 1966 Ford Fairlane 500 2dr .

having problems with both door windows .
they dont go up all the way, about 1/2" and at an angle , front going down.
i checked the tracks and guides and stoppers and just dont want to go , seems the X track tries to bind up at the top .. but i see nothing that stopping it..
i have read these windows always been a problems, even when new...

just wondering, is there any other car window tracks or whatever that can be put in its place that works better?
or just any help..

thanks

Re: 1966 Ford Fairlane window problems

Are these manual or power windows? Nothing else can be easily made to fit except '66-'67 window regulators. Macs Antique Auto Parts sells most everything to replace power OR manual regulators on these models.

Unless something is bent, or has rusted apart, its probably just the tracks and regulator parts gummed up with dried grease and dirt, and probably THESE parts... 1963-1965 Window Roller Assembly - Front Windows - MAC's Antique Auto Parts need replaced. They are made from hard plastic and old age has got to them.

There is an adjustable stop that controls how far up the windows go. The tracks bolt to the doors through slots so the glass can be adjusted for angle as well. Any auto glass shop should be able to do it for you if you're not inclined.

Ford glued the door glass to the mounting in the 60's. It gets brittle and and cracks sometimes. That can cause the glass to flop around. You'll have to remove the door trim panels to inspect the mechanism and hardware.

Re: 1966 Ford Fairlane window problems

I had a similar problem with my 67. The grease had dried out. Take the door panels off. Make sure the mechanism is not bent. Get a couple can's of break cleaner and spray the heck out of the mechanism to clean the old grease out. Let dry. Get a can of white lithium grease. Liberally spray it on the mechanism and the track. Gently start working the mechanism up and down. at first you may only get one tooth to rotate. eventually the new grease will get worked into the mechanism and should work fine.

Re: 1966 Ford Fairlane window problems

I've had the same problem with my 66 as well and cleaned out the mechanism on one and then it came apart! It was totally gone so probably won't happen if it still works some what. I even tried getting another crank mechanism from a new mustang regulator and switch them out......didn't number of gears so wouldn't work.

Start looking around for 66-67 front and back window regulators and coolect them! The crank mechanisms do interchange between the front and back......there are no after market new ones to be had and Mustang ones are close but not long enough.

My back passenger window works but it's not aligned right and rattles so I need to fix it after winter. Sometimes you can find the regulators on ebay or parts cars still.
