67 Fairlane XL

I'm looking at a 67 fairlane 500 XL that posted on craigslist. This car is a 3 speed manual on the floor with a 289 motor.

The interior color combination (black and white) seems odd to me as I haven't seen one like this before. Do you think this is the factory color scheme? Also it doesn't have bucket seats and a console, I was under the impression that XL models all had those. Any thoughts on that?

I'm waiting to hear back from them but overall it seems like a pretty decent deal if it runs. They are asking $1800, does that sound like a decent deal to you guys?

Re: 67 Fairlane XL

Bucket seat interior was XL500. But all can be ordered without. Generally an Xl 500 has console and floor shift and buckets. Every column shift car I ever saw was bench seat.

The color combo on the seat looks aftermarket but the black and white dash is normal for a white car.

$1800 is a good price if it's complete and solid.

Re: 67 Fairlane XL

Thanks for the info. Did Fairlane's come with a 3 speed on the floor? All the 3 speed cars I've seen have been column shift.

How difficult is it to swap that manual transmission for a C4 automatic or a 4 speed manual? I assume for the c4 you'd need a new starter, flywheel, and possibly a new or shortened drive shaft too. I would think going to a 4 speed manual would be quite a bit easier/cheaper.

Re: 67 Fairlane XL

The dash does appear to be repainted to me. The bezel around the instrument panel should be chrome and here it is white. Makes it look a little strange.
I also think someone has installed a floor shifter kit. This was very common back then, I installed a Foxcraft three speed floor shift in my 53 Chevy in 1964.
The trans can be what ever you want quite easily. My 67 started out as a 3 speed column shift, then c4 and now an aod.
Just my thoughts.

Fairlanes that I'm aware of if 3 speeds were all column shift, only 4 speeds were floor shift with the exception of the 3 speed overdrive and the Falcon Vans.

Re: 67 Fairlane XL

Thanks guys, I'm hoping to go look at it tomorrow if the weather isn't too bad. Anything I should be on the lookout for other than general mechanical and rust? I know the dashpad can be pretty expensive to replace so I'll check that out for sure. Any other major problem areas?

Re: 67 Fairlane XL

Everything in a 67 is hard to come by. they're a one year body. Use that to your advantage.

Rust in rear frame rail just where it arches up and starts going over axle, they're crappy in those areas on occasion, that's a BIG money price dropper there.

If they're asking 1800 and it runs and is complete look at all the floor pans and poke with a pen or a phillips screwdriver, get in the trunk, LOOK GOOD between trunk floor and quarter panels for seams or bondo for panel repair etc...

Under the brake and gas pedals also is a rust out area.

Take a penlight look under dash for damage by rust.... That means leaky cowl or windshield gasket.

I'm fairly certain that this car will have about 14 lbs of bondo on it somewhere...

But it's still nice at 1800 for a beginner car and they restore nicely
