coil spring too high
64 comet HT,302,PS, one thing led to another and i decided to replace most front suspension parts. new UCA and LCA, moog 8090 springs, shocks, global west strut bushings the firmer type not poly, new poly perches and top isolators, rebuilt idler arm, replaced bushings on 7/8 sway bar.dialed in a garage alignment, plumb bob level etc. Drove it today, first time, after 3 months on blocks, not bad except for a little weird on the dips in the road.the front spring measurement prior, was 25.25 in., at the lip on center. now its 28.5 in.looks like a gasser. the original spring were the same wire dia., and only a .25 inch shorter when out of the car. I read every spring thread in this forum. my original ht., was ok with me as i live in an area of dirt and rocky roads.I had occasional tire rub. I expected it to be a little higher but not 3in. Do I cut coils or start over with new springs. Thanks.

Re: coil spring too high
It will take a good 3 months or better to settle...but not 3" maybe 2". Did you tighten things down with the weight of the car on the ground? If not…that will make some difference on the ride height. I cut one coil from my new springs

Re: coil spring too high
Did Ford drive the cars around Dearborn for three months to let the springs drop down before sending them on the showrooms? No. Why? Because they ain't dropping. Well, maybe over 50 years they will drop, which is why everyone who gets new springs in 2012 ends up with the gasser look.

Re: coil spring too high
I had the same problem,2' to high. I pulled them out and put the original ones in that came on my 64 falcon, sits just right now. I had replaced all of the front suspension upper and lower arms. I don't think they were driven around before going to the dealers.

Re: coil spring too high
I did tighten the lca when grounded, and its been a month on the ground , still 28.5 at the lip, thought maybe a drive around the local dirt roads would settle it more but still the same.might cut one coil, but what a pain in the ass, I really studied what coils to buy and wanted the stock ride ht. and measured carefully.

Re: coil spring too high
I wonder if there is an outfit that you can just send them a spring and tell them to send you one back that will a.) let your car sit 2" lower but be stronger so when b.) the old and new springs took a bump they would hit the bump stop at the same time. Seems like it would be possible, maybe even simple...

Yes- Eaton Detroit Spring Home
you have to remember that when you buy aftermarket springs, they only offer a ONE FITS ALL. It is a crap shoot.
I would loosen the control arm bushings and shake the hell out of the front of the car and see if they settle. The trouble with cutting springs is that the spring rate increases as you cut. And don't cut with a hot wrench.

I'm pretty sure Ford use factory springs when they build cars...not aftermarket springs.

Re: coil spring too high
the 2 springs listed in Moog / rockwell oem catalog were 8088, 258 rate, inst ht, 9.0in, free ht., 14.96, those are the springs listed for most 6cyl. all v8, comets had 8090, 291 rate, inst ht., 9.o in, free ht 14.81 in. The spring i bought 4 months ago were Moog 8090's in the correct box, IT is the correct spring for 64 HT auto, no AC, too late to return them. also Painted them. The free ht., was the same, when out of the car, within 1/8 in. I'm going to measure the installed ht , see what it is. I think I read every thread on falcons and comets on the web. that's why I went with the stock springs .

I might be wrong but I seriously doubt Ford makes their own springs. Manufacturers buy lots of parts to build their cars, much like tires, braking systems, like Bosch for example and tons of other stuff.

Re: coil spring too high
Same deal when i did the frontend of my Fairlane, nose high in the air.
I eventually talked to Eaton Detroit spring who have all Ford specs for springs in their arsenal, spec;d me a 2.5" lower spring which was perfect for stance & overall handling 100% improvement.
I followed up by getting Eatons H.d. rear leafs, you just tell them the ride height you want,

Re: coil spring too high
that seems to be my backup plan EATON , almost nothing to lose by cutting one coil, as a got a deal on the moog 8090 online.
