Re: 66 Galaxie Horn and Ring Problem

All - First of all I want to say thank you to all who have replied - your help is MUCH appreciated! Here's a picture or 2 of the spring I have - again, I'm not even sure if this is THE spring I should be using! Let me know if it does or doesn't look correct.

Re: 66 Galaxie Horn and Ring Problem

Nah, STLZED is just some goofy username I use for all my online stuff - I'm in St. Louis, MO, so that's where the STL comes from, and ZED is part of my last name, so I just jammed the 2 together and that's it - I started using it about 10 years ago when first getting online and now I can't break the habit! If I started using something else I'd probably never find any of my posts

Question Re: 66 Galaxie Horn and Ring Problem

Deadhorse - Do you see in the steering wheel picture where you drew your blue circle? Not the horn ring pic, the upper one of the wheel itself - to me it almost looks like where you say the spring should rest there are 3 marks or rub marks where something should be making contact on that plate??? That's why I'm thinking I'm missing something - I see what looks like rub marks but from what I can see nothing I have in my bag 'o parts for this assembly fits the pattern of those marks.

Well darn, we were trying to make it more than it was for ya!

As for the springs, the one on the right looks like mine if I remember right. I think this thread and V8's is gonna drive me nuts and I'm going to have to go look at mine even though it's a '64!

Mine ever since I took the wheel off and back on a couple times in a row doesn't cancel the turn signals. Not to mention when the handle falls off you can't do it either. Weirdest experience I'd had in a long time next to having the steering wheel on upside down, was reaching to shut the signal off and there was no handle! LOL I didn't tighten it down good and it worked loose and just hit the floor. What a doofess.

Re: 66 Galaxie Horn and Ring Problem

All - I'm still not getting contact between the contact points, but I think I might have another culprit to blame it on, possibly. I bought a white retainer ring, like in FEandGoingBroke's picture below. After reading thru another post or 2 it sounds like the white one might be for a 500 XL, mine is just a 66 Galaxie 500, NOT XL. I picked up a spare horn ring a few months back at a swap meet and it had a BLACK retainer ring attached to the horn ring. From reading thru the previous posts on this subject, it seems there might be a bit of differnece between the 2 retainer rings, white and black. Someone 2 or 3 years ago in a post said the WHITE ones are for 500 XL, and BLACK is for 500 only. The BLACK one that came on the spare horn ring I bought, from a '66 also, has a part number of 35247-2 X, that look familiar to anyone? Unfortunately, the black one was broken, 2 of 3 tabs busted off, as usual.

Re: 66 Galaxie Horn and Ring Problem

I couldn't take it anymore and went and looked at mine on the 64 and it's different than the 66 but the spring is the same size on both ends.

Mine doesn't have the little metal contact doodads that are screwed to the base. The metal part on the horn ring itself is more like a petri(sp) dish and the edge of it contacts the horn button.

So mine is no help at all to ya.

Do you still have the black one? You could hold the two next to each other and see what the difference might be.

Re: 66 Galaxie Horn and Ring Problem

Here's this one, is this the same as you have? It does state XL so maybe there is a difference. There are 2 listed and one mentions body style codes also.

Re: 66 Galaxie Horn and Ring Problem

That's the part Deb, the black and white are diffrent, but similar enough that in the palm of your hand they look identical at first glance.

V8shadow. Your problem is likely a weak spring, and streaching retainer plastic I think...

Re: 66 Galaxie Horn and Ring Problem

a weak spring would just make the horn ring flop around -- or let it flop over and the horn would blow all the time-- -
btw --while you have the steering wheel off have you shorted across the contacts and see if the horn does blow-???-

Re: 66 Galaxie Horn and Ring Problem

He said he can cross it and make the horn blow I belive.

V8 has horn problems that are easier fixed with some tweaking I think.
