Increase HP of 289 / Retain Stock Appearance 289

Hi Folks, I know that modifying an engine to pump up horse power can include a little or a lot. What I want to do to my tired 289 is increase HP to between 250 and 300 without changing the stock appearance of the engine. OK, that said, I'm ready to hear all of your ideas. Yes, money is an issue but I know that I will have to pay for results. thanks in advance. Steve

Are you willing to change the intake and put headers on it?

A built 302 comes to mind. You could stroke it to a 347. You will have to do a 4 barrel, cam, and some head work along with headers. Speed cost money! How fast do you want to go?

Re: Increase HP of 289 / Retain Stock Appearance 289

I am thinking back here a few years, but I think FMC used to "Overquote or Overestimate" the power of their engines around 1966 or so. What you got was not as mentioned in the brochures but less. Was a Hot Rod article about this same time as how to get rated H.P. from your engine, or more using the parts you just bought when you got the car.

Apparently the folks at Hot Rod were not a fan of the quickie casting methods used on the Autolite carbs, and told how to get a good one or fix your old one. May tell you some places of lost H.P. they found.

The great thing about internal mods are that they are invisible...Grind off any logo's on aftermarket intakes or cylinder heads and paint everything and it will look stock..

Re: Increase HP of 289 / Retain Stock Appearance 289

I think that "back in the day" the engine were more typically underrated, not overrated, for insurance purposes. However, the automotive industry did change the way engines were rated sometimes around the early seventies, I believe, to use gross ratings instead of net ratings, or something like that. Gross HP was higher than net, or brake HP, as I understand it, but people more knowledgeable can correct me and properly explain that.

My engine builder told me he used heads like my 351W has on a 289 he built for himself many years ago; the 69, 70 351W heads had bigger valves. Download the Cam Quest software from Comp Cams and try out different combinations and see how impacts the virtual dyno results.
