What does the 500 in Galaxie 500 stand for?

Like the title says. I have wondered this for a while. What is the difference between a Galaxie and a Galaxie 500?

There is a difference between galaxie 500 and galaxie 500 xl. Which I believe you already know.

XL has bucket seats, console and the little twinkles at the end of the trim on the quarters.

Just 500 has bench seats, no twinkle thing at the end of the trim on the quarter and of course no console.

The XL is just a different more upper level trim class.

I have been the caretaker of my Galaxie for 12 years and every time someone asks what the 500 stands for I feel dumb. I figured the number had some significance.

No, think it just sounded cool as far as I can remember hearing. Oh wait, there was a story that had something to do with the Daytona 500 or some race of 500 but not sure how true that is.

Deb,

What do you mean by "twinkles" at the end of the trim on the quarter panels? My 500XL doesn't have them.

I think that was meant for the 64 owners.

I don't have a backup resource - yet, but I think it related to the begining of the Daytona 500.

Ford had used numbers in its designations of earlier cars, like the customs and Fairlanes, custom 300 being a sedan that ran the smaller tracks. When NASCAR start building the longer tracks for stock cars, to compete with the Indy 500, aerodynamic became a bigger part of racing than just who could make more horsepower.

Beo I was thinking that also but been a while since I've seen a discussion about it.

Yep Unioncreek, that's on the '64s that have the "twinkles" for lack of a better name. There probably is a proper name but I don't remember what it might be as usual.

Re: What does the 500 in Galaxie 500 stand for?

The "500" in Galaxie 500 was added after Ford swept the four 500+ mile races and had a NASCAR championship in 1963. I can't remember which races they were, but I know that one was a 600 mile race... I also can't find where I got this info from, but I'm still looking around.

EDIT:
Daytona 500
Indy 500
MotorTrend 500 (at Riverside)
??? 600

Car #1: 67 Galaxie Fastback, 289
Car #2: 97 Miata, automatic :-(

I think they're about the same size 8-)

laptop keyboards stink big time. Or do for me anyway. I have big probs with the touch pad too and prefer to hook up a mouse. I don't use one much either so that doesn't help at all.

Re: What does the 500 in Galaxie 500 stand for?

"Fairlane 500" existed in 1957 or 58. Galaxie was a trim package for it. A few years later the Fairlane was shrunk and "Galaxie" emerged as the name for the Ford full size.

So whatever reason Ford had for adding "500" to Fairlane, that is where the answer is for the Galaxie having it.

Here is a 1959 Fairlane 500 Galaxie. eBay Motors: Ford : Fairlane (item 250341254240 end time Dec-15-08 20:27:00 PST)

When you're going through hell, keep going.
Putts drives a 1965 Galaxie. Rebuilt 390, 4100 on a Performer, MX, AC, PS, PB w Scarebird front discs on Cragar 17" S/S.

That gets confusing when you see the fairlane and galaxie on the same car too.
