Re: drop spindles

Why do 4 threads over the last 6 months asking about dropped spindles for your '69?

I keep asking; thinking someone will read this that knows of a manufacture.
I can't be the only guy in the world wanting dropped spindles for late 60's ford can I?

Re: drop spindles

Ok, here's my answer then, and I hope it can help. What about earlier spindles?
I know of guys who have fitted disc brake stub axle assemblies off 69-72 Galaxies to fit their earlier Galaxies.
So in other words, will the dropped spindles off earlier ones, fit your '69?
It must work both ways I would think.

Re: drop spindles

Hope your not in Australia, as the government are talking about making drop spindles illegal, aswell as a load of other modification, in NSW anyway, dont know about other states, Danv, have you heard about this?

Re: drop spindles

Yeah, I've read about it this week on other forums. Haven't heard anything directly linked to WA though.

Re: drop spindles

so thanks for the response. I keep asking folks like fatman that questions but they think not. I believe the spindle attaching point is different but that does not make sense if it works one way. I am doing the wrecking yard search for an early 60s ford so i can lay the spindles side by side.

Re: drop spindles

I had a 61 Galaxie spindle and a 72 country squire spindle side by side and they are identical except for the disc brake brackets. The only "drop spindles" I have seen for an early Galaxie are Granada spindles and that IMHO is a really bad idea.

Re: drop spindles

Daze, why would using Granada spindles be a bad idea? Is the Granada a much lighter car?
This place lists a dropped spindle thru 1964 Galaxies, but they may be the Granada ones modified to use the Galaxie tie rods.

Re: drop spindles

I went to the link and the calipers are Granada, There is a very good chance those are Granada spindles but with out seeing the back side I could not say if they were Granada for sure. I believe the taper for the Galaxie and Granada tie rod end are the same.

As far as it being a bad idea, the geometry is all wrong. The distance between the Upper and lower ball joint mounts is less on a Granada spindle which will throw off the camber curve. The Ackerman angle (steering arm positioning) is a factor of wheel base and track width and the Granada uses the same chassis measurements as the Mustang which is a whole bunch smaller than a Galaxie requiring a totally different Ackerman angle. Ackerman is the biggest issue. if you want a more detailed explanation of Ackerman angle and why having the wrong one is a bad thing let me know and I will post further information. I do not want to bore you with details you do not want.

Re: drop spindles

If you are not building a race car, keep your stock spindels & stock drum brakes ! Just buy new 1-2 dropped eaton springs. It`s so easy & cheap, and keeps your cars orginality :O)

Re: drop spindles

I read somewhere that the Thunderbird brake swap lowers the front of a Galaxie. I don't know how true this is or how much would lower it, but it is an option.

I have t-bird/LTD II front discs on my 62 and they have the same ride height as the original drums.

Re: drop spindles

Oh...Well, I guess that means I will be cutting my springs after all. I was hoping they would lower it. One more thing to add to the list of things to do.
