1964 Galaxie, dash & bezel removal

I need a lil help with removing this front bezel of my dash. I seen a thread on it a couple of months ago but can't find it now. Any and all help would be appreciated. I don't need to take the whole dash out but I could use that info for future reference.

Air knob removal*
Light knob removal*
Wiper knob removal*
Climate control removal*

I already have the clock and ignition out.

Remove two screws in plastic ribbed center piece. Remove screws in upper lip and lower lip of bezel. disconnect the speedometer and all the other wires going to the gauges. Better to do this laying on your back and label the wires. That's about it. Oh, it's a lot easier to do with the steering wheel removed.

You will need a bezel removal tool like this.

Ford Galaxie Parts, Ford Galaxie Restoration Parts: GalaxieParts.com

On the light switch knob you will have to get information on here from someone who has done it as you have to push/pull it but I don't remember what's the way to do it!

Oops! I think I miss understood you. You didn't mean your cluster bezel, you mean the trim bezel. Then yes, you need the tool and there are atleast one speed nut that will need to be removed from the small piece to the right of the glove box. Sorry, I didn't read the question very well before I replied.

Re: 1964 Galaxie, dash & bezel removal

I used a itty bitty screw driver like for eye glasses to unscrew the ones that have the little screw.

Air knob removal*
On these there is a nut on the back side of the dash that you will need to remove. Also follow the cables to where they attach and remove them as they come out with the cables.

Light knob removal*
Light switch you reach up behind the dash and on top of the switch is a little button you push down on. Push that and pull the knob out. It will come out with the rod included. Then you will see that you can use an extra wide screw driver to turn the bezel with, unscrew it and the switch will come out the back.

Wiper knob removal*
The wiper switch has the itty bitty screw thing on the bottom side of the knob, unscrew that, pull the knob off and it will be simular to the headlight switch for removal.

Climate control removal*
Remove the cables from the heater box, there are 2 nuts on the back side of the dash, think it is two. You will have to feel up there as it might be 4. Been a while. remove those and pull it out with cables attached. Oh and unplug the wire on the back of the fan switch. Might be able to do that once it's pulled out a little bit if it pulls out far enough with the wires attached.

Hi

I have read that you had removed the bezel ignition. How did you do it... I`ve been trying for a while and can`t do it. By the way, thanks to this forum I have been able to removed all of the other ones.

The ignition switch you have to remove the cylinder first by putting the key in and turning to accessory then insert a straightened paperclip or stiff wire in that tiny little hole you will see on the front of the switch, You will feel it like depress a button in there and turn the key a bit more counter clockwise and the tumbler will come out. Push in on the switch from the back and turn it I think counter clockwise and then you can remove the bezel and such.

I made a bezel tool from a piece of pipe, using a hack saw and a file. Worked very well...just took a little time. You need to determine the size of the bezel that receives the protruding tips, then buy a pipe piece that diameter and then cut and file to produce the appearance of the tool.

Re: 1964 Galaxie, dash & bezel removal

I hadn't even seen one of those tools before when i removed the bezels from a dash i had. I used a tiny allen wrench for the knobs that had a barrel screw or whatever they are called or i thought that's what they were. Worked great whatever they are. lol

Re: 1964 Galaxie, dash & bezel removal

For some of the bezels, I took a small needle nosed pliers, inserted them into the bezel notches, "opened" the pliers, and gently turned to loosen and/or tighten.
