I heard that 352 heads with some porting on the exaust side flow better than 390 heads is this true?

I know for my 62 the 352 and 390 heads are the same part number. There may be different numbers for different horsepower ratings.

any ideas what it would cost to have a set of heads rebuilt with hardned seats and just a stock build?

Re: Will 352 heads fit a 390?

There are no "352" or "390" heads unless you mean the 1960 352HP. Other than that 352, 390, and most 428 heads are pretty much the same. After 68 they had lower exhaust ports and thermactor bosses. Cobra Jet and GT heads have slightly larger valves. 427's are where heads really change with the low riser, medium riser, high riser, and tunnel port. But those are rare and expensive. Basically port and polish whatever you've got or save up for some aluminum Edelbrocks.
Stock rebuild ~$450 plain Jane. From there you usually get what you pay for.

I have a 66 and I know someone has a set of 68 heads off a 352 thats why I was curious as to if they would work.

You want C?AE 6090 R heads. They're average stock heads that you can do stuff to....

Re: Will 352 heads fit a 390?

Out of the box they may perform the same, but some heads like the ones I run are cast different. I am running the C6AE-R castings which can be ported out to the same dimensions as 427 medium riser or 428 Cobra - Jet heads which is what I did to mine for my 445 stroker. Also I added bigger valves, 2.09" intake and 1.66" exhaust. These castings came off a 66 390
2-v motor. Oddly enough the motor that came in my car had C6AE-U castings on a 390 4-V motor. The "U" castings are useless for making horsepower. To do what I did, porting, polishing, gasket matching, cost about 1800 bucks which is more the a set of Edelbrock performer heads. However, your thinking is on the right track. Get your 390 to breathe better by better cylinder heads and DEFINEATLY free flowing exhaust manifolds or headers will yield you the biggest performance gain versus any other modifications you might have in mind.

I think as folks here have already pointed out the 352 and the 390 share a lot of parts in common. As I remember, there was something about dished pistons to keep the compression ratio lower on the 390. But near everything else is but the same.

I had one of the very early sets of CJ heads on my Fairlane GT 390 of 1967. It was created via H-M and used some odd-ball valves that later became standard on later CJ engines of the 1960's. It required Premium fuel, for it knocked near all the time, hot or cold weather. Compression pressure thing I thought.
