The whole of the front suspension was junk on my friend's 1962 squad car. Had to obtain replacement parts via some dealer in Colorado. He just had one set that came off of a XL. Parting word after placing a C-C order via that dealer was to try the SE states known dealers as they were more plentifull there, due to racing. Overall, I think they used same ball joints and pivots as in standard autos, but were measurably heavier.

The above quote is from the 1962 Galaxie Registry.

The following is a list of engine codes for all HiPo cars of which the 62 R code is clearly not a HIPo car.
The HiPos all had bigger brakes, large fuel lines and fuel pump, hard brakes lines going up to the radiator cross member, the suspensions were upgraded. They were all manual cars, power steering and power brakes were not an option due to the low engine vacuum.

Engine codes
Code
Engine
B 8-Cylinder 406 Cubic Inch 4-barrel High Performance
G 8-Cylinder 406 Cubic Inch 6-barrel (3 deuces) 405 hp
M 8-Cylinder 390 Cubic Inch 6-barrel (3 deuces) High Performance 401 hp Q 8-Cylinder 390 Cubic Inch 4-barrel High Performance 375 hp
R 8-Cylinder 390 Cubic Inch 4-barrel Low Compression Export, 84 Octane

Am not sure any of this helps.

And to think here. My official Ford manual says that EXPORT cars and engines were denoted with a "numeral" instead of a "Letter" for a few years prior and afterwards.

Goes to show you, can't trust what the auto manufacturer says about their vehicles.

Wm.
coosbaylumber,

Please do not take it the wrong way as I am not disputing what you are saying. You are certainly correct that Ford used numerals for export, however, according to the "Decode This" website Free VIN Decoder - Vehicle Identification Number Report website, Ford used letters on export vehicles in the years 1960,61,62 and numerals in 1963.

Having spent most of my working life for a vehicle manufacturer, there are errors in the the manuals, micro fiches (remember them) and what the company I worked used "Line Setting Tickets" or vehicle build sheets, what ended up in Tune & Test did not necessarily match up with what was on the LST!.

Does your friend still have the front brake drums?
If he has, you may want to measure them or the brake shoes.
If they are the HiPo type, the shoes should measure 3" wide and the brake drums should be 4" wide.

It's interesting that the 427 R in the above list is noted to be a 3x2bbl set up.

Re: 1962 Q code Update

Its been awhile since my last post, family had to come first, my father inlaw Dennis was diagnosed with lung cancer in April and sadly he passed away Wednesday a week ago and his funeral was last Tuesday.

I worked on the car yesterday and got the rebuilt bigger and better radiator installed. Filled it up with coolant and fired her and let it idle to check for any coolant leaks and it was just fine. Was able to find out where the center carb was weeping out some fuel. Will be giving the carbs some new gaskets and seals and that should take of that.

The weather has been coldest and wettest for 14 years and will have to wait a few weeks before we can finish the last of the clear coats. There are plenty of things to keep us going and it is still progressing nicely.

Re: 1962 Q code Update

Things are still progressing and have been working around the issue of not being able clear coat the car due to the cold weather.

I have been able to locate an original fuel canister along with some repro 3/8 fuel lines from the fuel pump to the canister and line from the canister to the fuel log. I also located a repro mounting bracket for the the canister. Will post some pictures of the engine bay once I have cleaned up the wiring and give the block a lick of paint

I am holding off on doing the side window weatherstrips and the roof rail rubbers until after the exterior surface is finally done, all I need is one good day over 17C and the clear can be applied.

Also in the last week or so the car got its new wheels and will be selling the Centerlines to a young guy at the tire place who mounted tires on to the Torq Thrusts. Fitting the rear wheel on the drives side presented a little clearance issue.

After taking a number of measurements, a little trimming of the inner lip soon had the wheel mounted without any further clearance issues. Minimal material was removed and it will not affect the stainless trim being screwed back on to the wheel arches.

Re: 1962 Q code Update

I'd like to see some pics with the wheels fitted please. I'm tossing up whether I should change mine, and was thinking of Cragar 5 spoke wheels.

Will post some full shots of the car shortly, the weather has dictated that work is continuing on the dash area and making sure that everything goes back in the right place and everything works. Still got to do the glove box and all the stainless pieces need to be refitted to the dash.
Spent some time making sure the fender, hood and door gaps are as good as we can get it.

As a bit of timeout, worked on getting lil bros 67 Ranchero ready for paint.
The paint on this one will be a little wild and I will be laying on some flames.

The exterior door handles for the 62 are going to be re chromed and will be meeting with the platers on Monday to see how long it will be before I will get them back.

There is a ton of work still to do, each passing week good progress has been made.

Re: 1962 Q code Update

Got the exterior door handles back from the platers and they come up a real treat.

Ran into a whole bunch of issues with the carbs. Firstly all of the carbs had been ****ed around by the previous owners. The accelerator pumps on all the carbs had different screws, being they had both flat and philips head screws mixed. 2 of the carbs had a least one oversize screw on the fuel bowls. The rear carb bowl had the threads stripped where the needle and seat screws into. So I had do a lot of running around to get rebuild kits and trying to locate a carb that I could rat the bowl off. The younger brother came to the rescue with an old 2 barrel that will donate its bowl.

I hope to have it running right this weekend and no more fuel puddling on to the intake.

Re: 1962 Q code Update

Spent a bunch of time sorting out the various carb issues mainly the leaks.
Rebuilt the carbs with new kits, new needle and seats and reset the floats.
Changed the hoses from the log to the carbs and got it running again pretty good. Rebuilt the original HiPo fuel pump and reinstalled it. Tracked down a new fuel canister, pipes and a repro mounting bracket, will install that shortly. In the meantime spent a bit more time on getting the engine dressed with new valve covers

Will get a new radiator cap and few other odds and ends that are still required

If the weather will be kind in the next couple of weeks will hit the body with clear and compound it.

The headlight buckets have been cleaned and painted, the headlight rings that retain the light to the buckets have been cleaned and polished and they are like new.

Another problem that has reared its ugly head, is that once the engine has been started and running for a while, the starter motor decides to engage with the flywheel. Suspect that the ignition switch is faulty as when I bought the car, it had a toggle switch to start it. I had an auto electrician go through the electrics, he did away with the kill switch and the toggle switch.

Here is a pic of one of the original valve covers I had just removed from the engine. And no I did not clean it.
