Which starter fits which FE flywheel 153 vs 184 tooth?

Howdy again folks. I've made a mistake and need some guidance. I sold the C6 that was in my '62 Galaxie and am now ordering up the bits for a manual trans. Problem is, I forgot to count the teeth on the flexplate before I shipped it out, so I don't know what tooth count my starter works with. I count 9 teeth on my non-original, non-bendix starter. Does this translate to absolutely being for the original 153 tooth flywheel or the later model 184 tooth one? thanks all!

The higher count flex plates are the later one and should be used with the later style starter

Understood, but how many teeth are on the late model vs early model starter?

I posed a similar question on another forum and was told that 1965 was the year they came out with the 184T flexplate. I have an aftermarket starter and needed the 184T version.

When i got my 63 it already had a c6 in it, But they had put the old fmx [ 153 tooth] flex plate in it, With a late model starter, The old gal did not like that, it sounded terrible, but it did start. When i pulled the motor out i replaced the flex plat with a 184 tooth count and a late model starter. I have not fired it up yet, that should come some time in the next week or so. Hope this helps.

Digging through some old manuals, they list the bendix drive for the '62 FE having 9 teeth, which would correspond originally to factory 153 tooth flywheel. Ok, so does anyone have a tooth count for the starter drive that would match up to a 184 tooth flywheel? I'm guessing it is going to be 10-12 tooth?
