Red face Crites 460 swap mounts

Does anyone have experience with the Crites 460 swap mounts for the 67 Galaxie? They don't have pictures or any detail on their web site. I called and they were not very helpful, insisted there were pictures on their web site and were out of stock so they couldn't take any pictures.

I noticed that the 64 mounts didn't come with frame perches, wondering if that is true for the 67. Without a picture or diagram I don't have a clue how they will mount. I sure wish Tex would get the ones he is working on fabbed up so we can see them.

Im not sure on the 67 but on my 65 the bottom mount goes over the cross member, and you drill one hole, super easy.
If youd like, PM me with your email addy and Ill send you a couple of pics of my 65 mounts. Im sorry I cant post them here, I never figured out how, and you cant teach an old dog new tricks. Actually, I just dont want to learn any new tricks :-)

Re: Crites 460 swap mounts

My email is donwhis@aol.com.

This is a question, didn't the 390 mounts for the Gal change in 66? I tried using the tip I got on modifying the 390 motor mounts to work on the 460 and use my original perches. But, it turns out the author did it on 64 and 65 390s. Further research seemed to say that the motor mounts changed in 66 which is why my 67 mounts could not be modified.

Re: Crites 460 swap mounts

Must have been wrong about the mounts, Auto Krafters shows the same mount for a 390 from 65 to 68. But I still can't figure out how to modify them to work.

Cross member mounts changed between the pre-65 body/engine compartment and 65 forward.

The biggest change was the pre-65 was simple, it was welded to the cross member.

The later models had a removable (bolt-on perch) which held either a sbf/6 cylinder perch or a FE perch from the factory. If the car originally came with a small block or straight 6, you would need to remove it and install an FE style perch. The motor mount, on the engine, would then allow a factory style drop in of a big block (FE).

Some people found that with a little "finess" you could enlogate the mounting hole enough so that you could use drop a a 429 in the same mounts if you made a few modifications to the block motor mount.

The Crites 429/460 mount requires you to remove the factory perch completely, replace it with their perch - which allows you to use factory 429/460 mounts.

Both techniques have been detailed in several posts. Its not difficult - as long as you realize that 64 and earlier install is not the same as 65 and later. So what happens/happened on a 63, 64 has very little relevance with a 65, 66, 67. After 68, the 429 was a facrory option, so its just a matter of swapping parts. If you look closely at the frame, it will all be clear.

Re: Crites 460 swap mounts

HI did you ever get the crites mounts to fit? I cant figure out how its supposed to fit. I ground off the tranny fins but it wont go back far enough. I do them the other way and my starter wont fit and my rad will be to close.Trying to use there headers too, if you had any luck i would love to see pictures of the install gawatson@sasktel.net , Have to agree crites has not been very helpful, thanks george

Re: Crites 460 swap mounts

Sorry, I can't help you. Crites was on backorder 2 years ago so I modified the 390 mounts per the many post you can find on here. I hear the Crites, no experience, make the engine sit high so you have a problem closing the hood.

I would send them back and pay $150 for a pair of Galaxie or Thunderbird 439/460 mounts. Places like Desert Valley Auto Parts or CTC Auto Ranch would have them. They bolt in where the 390/289 mounts were. I think there are a few post on here about using them versus the modified 390 mount. It sounds like the Galaxie/Thunderbird mounts are a cleaner install.

I ended up using FPA shorty headers, bolted right up and no problem so far. I like them.

Remember that the 385 engine is 2 1/2" longer than a 390, if you push the engine forward to clear the firewall, fan clearance suffers. If you don't use some of the additional length to move forward, the tranny cross member won't slide back far enough. On my car I could move the cross member about 1" back, so 1 1/2" of the engine got closer to the radiator. My solution was to put dual electric fans on so that the water pump pulley was clearance between the fans.

I think if you search by user name you will find some pictures of all this. Not in 1 post.

Re: Crites 460 swap mounts

As stated do a search for Crites and you will find a ton of info. I post many things on the 68 install I did.I'm sure the 67 is pretty much the same as a 68. Here are some pictures I took that show the mount in place and the odd clearances crites leave. The stock starter was too tight for me so I used a mini high torque. All in all if I had to do it over I would mod the FE mounts.

Heres one of many post on a 68
