FPA headers

Just about ready to order headers for my 460 swap and I am leaning toward the FPAs. Anyone have good or bad they want to share about them?

Re: FPA headers

I have the long tube on an FE and I believe they are the best headers I have ever used. They are expensive but the quality is as good as I have seen in commercial headers. They have thick flanges where they bolt to the heads that help resist warping and they use a ball & socket connection at the collector which I have found to be trouble free.
I have used many headers for FE engines that had tubes going around the cross-member and after they spend some time heating and cooling they are almost impossible to get apart again.
I have a friend however with a 65 Falcon that bought two sets and finally had to have one set modified to make them work. He may not have the same praises for them that I do?

Talking Re: FPA headers

Scott,

I didn't tell enough details. I am doing a 460 swap so FPA only makes the shorty header for the 460 in a 67 Gal. I have read in other post that the FPAs do have a thicker flange and I have read about the long tube single pipe issues with the collectors. Those issues and ground clearance are what drive me toward the FPA shortys, and I am not racing the car only cruizing the streets. Thanks for the comments

Re: FPA headers

I put FPA shorties on my 66 FE. Ceramic coating is holding up great after 1 season of driving. They cost $750 but I have no complaints at all with the product. Would do it again.

Re: FPA headers

I have a set of FPA '64 460 shortys in a box on the shelf. These are a few years old now, waiting for me to get the engine in the car.

The materials and fabrication are excellent, can't say anything for fit yet (obviously, and it might not matter anyway as the ones pictured on the website for this application now look a bit different from mine, haven't called him to find out why the change.)

Re: FPA headers

Try this link,
Stan's Headers, standard and custom high performance header designs for automotive and marine engines.

Stan's Headers manufactures the headers FPA sells.
The headers are good quality, I bought a set direct from Stans Headers in 1992 and they are still holding up well.

I've known the owner of FPA for roughly 35 years. I have nothing good to say about him, so I will say no more.
JMHO.

Re: FPA headers

I looked through the Stans site and I do not find any mention of Galaxie headers? Lot of ford truck applications but no Galaxie?
Did I miss something?

Re: FPA headers

I have a set of shorties on my 64' vert with the 514 motor. They had to be massaged with a BFH to keep them from contacting the frame. Could be just that they were tight because it was convertible but I know the 514 sits pretty high in a 64' and with the x member they were pretty much the only set we could use. The set in my hardtop with FE are long tube and fit spectacular. Just my 2 cents.

Re: FPA headers

I couldn't find them either, just assumed he had a special deal with FPA to only sell through them.

The box mine came in have FPA printed on one flap and Stan's on the other, so whether the box goes out labeled as FPA or Stan's just depends on how they staple it.

Correct, that deal should expire.

Re: FPA headers

I ordered my shortys from Stan yesterday, nice guy, with the polished ceramic coating. He asked for pictures of the 67 once the headers are in the car. Seems he has pictures of them on a long block on a stand but nothing with them installed. I will try to post them on here also.

Wink Re: FPA headers

I finally got the FPA shorty headers installed and they fit perfect. There is at least 1/2" clearance on all the tight spots. Even though I had the front fenders and inner fenders out I think I could have installed the headers with them on. I can also change the starter with them on. I couldn't be happier, unless they were free!

Re: FPA headers

I have FPA 1 3/4 Long tube headers on my 70 Mach1. I LOVE these headers, they fit perfect and the quality is excellent. My experience with Stan is nothing short of top notch customer service.
