Re: Whats The Difference in a Truck C6 & a Car C6?

I just rebuilt and installed a truck c6 in my 66 galaxie FE. I don't think there's a difference. Love it. Same gears too; 1st 2.46, 2nd 1.46, 3rd 1:1

Many FE 67-72 maybe other years had a companion flange instead of a slip yoke. I have had three 429-460 trucks and they all have had slip yoke type tail shafts. always look at thee tail shaft to be safe!

The tail shafts are different lenghts. About 6-10" difference. The internals are the same tho.

Re: Whats The Difference in a Truck C6 & a Car C6?

Depends on the year of each vehicle and the wheel bases. Some C6's have a slightly longer tail. But most of them have no difference. Internally all C6's are brutes. My 400 79 F150 currently has the C6 from a 460 74 Country Squire. And my 67 Galaxie briefly had a small block C6 from an 82 F150 in it behind a 69 351W. There are a lot of parts that swap between full-size cars and full-size pickups, especially drive train items.

Re: Whats The Difference in a Truck C6 & a Car C6?

Agreed, the only trans that will fit FE is an FE trans. You can go FMX which is three piece and just change out bellhousing, but I would lean toward C6, cheaper to buy and maintain and just a stronger trans. One thing to think about is parasitic loss. C6 is taking about 60hp between crank and rear end where that FMX will only steal about 25hp, 28 for the C4. or just go powerglide with a mear 18hp lost.

I can see that the tail may be longer, that would be why I had to get a shorter drive shaft 60" fits very snug, ideal would be 59"

Re: Whats The Difference in a Truck C6 & a Car C6?

There's a 6-bolt small block pattern (late 289/302/351W/351C)
a round shaped FE/FT pattern (332/352/360/390/406/410/427/428)
and a square top big block pattern (400/429/460)

I see C6's of all the various bell housing patterns on Craig's list all the time. Usually anywhere from "come haul this off" to $200. You should be able to find the one you need easily.

Re: Whats The Difference in a Truck C6 & a Car C6?

Yes, you can find C6's on Craigslist, but they're usually for the 351's or 429/460. I had a heck of a time finding one for an FE that wasn't for a truck or from a 4WD. I ended up getting one from a wrecking yard in Ridgecrest CA. There just wasn't any to be had in my area.

Im having no problems finding any c6 except for fe's. I just dont have a fe bell housing t swap out. 2 more questions will my tail shaft from my C.o. M. work? and how hard is it to rebuild a c6?

Re: Whats The Difference in a Truck C6 & a Car C6?

You do know that the C6 bellhousing is cast as one piece with the case and not removable.

The COM tailshaft will NOT work. As Domino said, they are completely different. But even if you do end up with a different length C6, driveshafts are easily and cheaply altered.

A C6 is not harder to rebuild than any other 3 speed auto. That said, automatic transmissions have more moving parts than an engine. If you're not experienced or don't have much trans knowledge, it's best left to someone who does.

Take a look at the TCI street fighter c6 trans, I got mine through summit and I am very happy with it. There was no core charge and I got a better price through Summit than TCI quoted me direct.

Re: Whats The Difference in a Truck C6 & a Car C6?

The c6 was cake to rebuild. Broader performance has a good 500 up rebuild kit. It's about $300, I just built my c6 with it. Great directions and performance. Just don't drill the check ball out of the stator. Also get the Hanes transmission manual, those things and some patience and it will take only about a day. In my opinion it's easier than a motor. Don't be intimidated by it, just assemble in reverse order.

Another thing to consider is a stall converter. I have a TCI Street Fighter 2600 stall, makes launchlots a lot better. $300

I also have a custom length aluminum drive shaft from The Drive Shaft Shop. $400
