Timing Help Needed 351w

Hey everyone I have a cammed 351w that has the firing order of a 302. Im having a heck of a time getting it timed. While idling, the timing mark on the pulley is nowhere to be seen. This should be timed like a 302 if it has the same firing order, correct?

Re: Timing Help Needed 351w

I am assuming you are comparing your 351 to the 302 HO that came in the Fox body Mustangs. Those are the 302s that have the same firing order as the 351W. The firing order should be 13726548 going counter clockwise around the distributor. Is this what you have?

no, my 351w was cammed, and after the cam called for the 302 firing order.

Re: Timing Help Needed 351w

Sounds like your 180 deg out if you can't see the timing mark at all.

Re: Timing Help Needed 351w

If it running at all it is not 180 deg out. Before you go any further make sure the crank pulley is ok and is not coming apart, The timing marks move if this happen.

Re: Timing Help Needed 351w

pull number 1 plug ,bring number 1 piston to top dead center, check to see if your timing mark is were it is suppose to be,if not turn it till piston returns to top dead center again and check mark again ,remove distributor cap see if rotor button is at number 1, remove cap first to start with

Re: Timing Help Needed 351w

Engines will run if 180deg out of time. The only way to truly put the motor at TDC is to remove the valve cover, as motors turning watch for the intake valve to come back up, then when the piston comes up that will be TDC in combustion stroke. You may have it TDC on exhaust. Which will put you 180 out and not able to see the timing mark because it on the other side.

Good luck

Re: Timing Help Needed 351w

ok i think i got it. i clipped the timing light to the 2nd spark plug to see how far off i was from the mark, and sure enough it mustve been 180 off cuz the mark was all the way to the left and barely visible. so i adjusted the distributor a bit and then checked it off the number 1 again, and i sware it was almost right where the 10 mark was. some one mightve already answered this, but what is the timing for a 302 (since my motor has the 302 firing order) i have set at 10 btdc i think (the mark to the left of 0) its definitely running a hell of a lot better. starts right up now. its amazing how much better it runs. now i just gotta get the idle down to 800-850 rpm's for my cam. thanks for all the help everyone.
