Crown Vic to '66 swap

Anyone ever seen a full front end suspension swap from a '96 Crown Vic to a '66 Gal? I have access to a cheap good running '96 Crown Vic with 4.6, auto, air bags, and rear disc brakes. I know it's a ton of work but I'm hoping it would give me updated brakes and air bags. I do not plan to use the 4.6 or drive train-just want the frame and suspension. The target car is in a snowbank so I haven't had a chance to start measuring yet.

The Crown Vic front crossmember is a very common swap on Ford pickups because the pickup frame rails are straight and flat and - interestingly enough - the same 34 inches apart as the CV front frame rails.

The Galaxie frame rails have a considerably more involved shape, with an upward arch and spring saddle and etc. formed into the rail. You'd have to do some considerable adaptation to make it work.

Generally that is 2003 and newer. Completely different from 02 and older which is similar to stock.

Re: Crown Vic to '66 swap

The 03 and newer cross members unbolt from the crown vics, and that is why guys put them under their trucks, but you do have to weld on a lower control arm mount.

now, if you want good brakes, the 98/99 to 2002 crown vics have a 13" class rotor.

I am in the middle of putting the big crown vic brakes on the front of my Gal. after I get the front wrapped up I am gonning to do the back. I'll start a post on the upgrade

Indeed you're right, I stand corrected.

Re: Crown Vic to '66 swap

Thanks guys! Interestingly enough- my other project is a 1970 F100 that has been in the family since new so I want to get it to the point where it can be a daily driver. After some research on the Ford Truck forums I feel that is a much easier swap with the Crown Vic front end. It's all good though. I read here the belief that my 66 Gal front end can be pretty stout with some upgrades so I'll be pleased with that for some basic cruising. My F100 will be happy to ditch the twin I beams also in place of a better riding suspension!

Re: Crown Vic to '66 swap

Wait a minute. You want to get rid of the Twin-I-Beam suspension?! That's the very thing that made 65-96 Ford trucks so rugged, especially the 65-79 that used the forged I-beams. Sure they don't ride like a car but they weren't meant to, they're trucks. Real trucks, not the tinny cush-mobiles everyone cranks out today. Wow. Now I've heard everything.

Also, you'd accomplish nothing installing an '96 Crown Vic front suspension. Other than a few minor changes over the years, it's pretty much the same conventional front suspension from 65-02. Replace the worn-out shocks, springs, bushings, and sway bar (which are probably all worn-out on the '96 as well) and you're good to go.

Re: Crown Vic to '66 swap

Update: I passed on the '96 Vic front end and scored a bolt-on '03 Crown Vic Police Interceptor front end complete with power rack and pinion, master cylinder/booster, rotors, calibers, front end sway bar and mounts- everything PLUS aluminum drive shaft and rear axle complete with disc brakes. All for $200! I was pleased. Quick measurements reveal that it may be some serious fabrication to get this front end to work on my '66 Gal. I may look at using the front disc/rear disc brake setups, sway bar, and rack/pinion but not the rest. OR it may all go under my '70 F100!

Let the fun begin!
