MSD diode placement?

Just wondering where you good people put your diode for those running an MSD ignition?

Iíve got mine triggering through a points distributor and of course I get run-on due to the feedback through ALT light. At the moment, Iíve unhooked the 6A box (shutting the car off by pulling the coil lead off is kind of inconvenient, not to mention a tad jarring at times!) and I am consequently running on points for the time being.

MSD says the diode needs to run inline to connection 1 on the voltage regulator, but of course thereís a 4-pin plug in there so Iíll have to tap the wire somewhere aft of the voltage reg to install the diode. Logic tells me I want to splice the diode into the Green/Red wire, before the wire runs into the 4-pin plug.

Sound right to you guys? Carís a 65 hardtop, stock wiring.

contact MSD tech department, I have found them to be very helpful in the past.

Sounds correct, but 2 questions:
1. Automatic or stick shift ??

2. How high is your idle???

Automatic trans. just put it in gear before you shut it off...
Stick shift then same thing, just ride-out the clutch and then shut it off..

Sounds like your idle is way too high..timing run-on is normally caused by too high an idle and not timing (as is thought)...

It's not that kind of "run on".

The OP is talking about the ignition box actually staying energised (powered) and keeping the engine running due to a voltage feed-back issue.
Even tho the key is switched off, the ign box continues to "steal" power because of a back-feed voltage thru the ALT light circuit.
Installing the diode in-line with the ALT light circuit stops the feedback and lets you shut the engine off with the ign switch.

Re: MSD diode placement?

Correct, this is caused by the MSD unit stealing power from the ALT light - nothing to do with idle or anything else. The ONLY way to shut the car off with the MSD unit hooked up at present is to remove a wire from somewhere, such as the coil. Not fun though - shocky-shocky...

I know the diode should be spliced into the no 1 terminal on the VR (I've been onto the MSD site as well). My question is more a case of, is the no 1 terminal the Green/Red wire? And presumably I can splice it into said wire "aft" of the plug?
